What's with all the graphic packs?

What I have done:
powered a pump stack from a water wheel sitting in an aquifer to pump several z-levels. Didn't get all the way through the aquifer, though.

What I'm trying to do:
create an obsidian factory.

what I haven't done:
worked out the "current" military system
worked out how to protect my settlement from were[critters]
grown a fortress beyond 100
minecarts
established a full metal industry from mining to crafting
bees/mead/soap
justice

Yea, use dirt roads to clear off the mud.

I don't know about the others, but I have glaucoma, and high-contrast (such as between bright colors and black backgrounds) gives me terrible headaches.  So I use a graphics pack (Phoebus or Obsidian) to actually play.

It is possible to change the color scheme of the tiles to make it a lot lower contrast.  It's not using true console so the colors can actually be modified in an init file to arbitrary shades and hues.

Admittedly using a tileset is likely the easier solution. Less experimenting with rgb values. But something that can be done that seems to be a little used feature.

For an example, the upper board default style, darkling, gives me a headache.  So I don't think spending hours carefully tweaking values is an effective use of my time.
