You are a (Magical, Intelligent) Boulder
« on: May 02, 2015, 04:04:13 pm »

You slowly solidify on the slope of the volcano, crystal matrices forming just so. A spark of power is caught in the mesh of a crystalline brain. Slowly, you become aware. Above, sky is grey with clouds of ash. Around you, lifeless wasteland of slowly cooling lava.

      Time Passes

You have seen several cycles of the white moon above waning and waxing. The night of a full moon, you are bathed in pale white light. A flicker of red in the air, that quickly vanishes again. The first sproutlings are pushing up out of the virgin soil.

      Time Passes

Small clumps of grass and shrubs now. Several slender saplings are also within range of your senses. It took several further moons for you to grasp part of the secret behind the red flickering, and how to see it. Gossamer thin lines of red snake across the land and through the air, writhing and shifting from day to day. The are still a mystery to you however.

      Time Passes

You now have fully grasped the yearly cycle of seasons, your patient observations linking them to sun's variations across the sky. The lavaflow is nearly completely reclaimed by nature, several creepers even covering your rocky surface. Small scaled creatures and feathered fliers have made their home here. One of the lines happened to pass through you, and suddenly filling you up with a torrent of raw, untamed power. As the line continued to drag through you, you instinctively grabbed a metaphysical hold of it, anchoring it to you.

[Rudiments of Leyline Manipulation understood]

The other lines grow more and more stable, and slowly a elaborate "web" of static leylines forms, pulsing with power. With mana. Though you have been experimenting with the power you gain from the leyline, it is too little to do much with. The most you've managed is pushing around a few pebbles. A distance down the slope from you, two of the the thin red lines converge into a slightly thicker one. If you could get to that convergence you might double the mana you gain.

What do you do over the next decade? (Pick Two, Bold your actions)

> Continue experimenting (what? include mana used)
> Though you absorb mana from the leyline flowing through you, by no means do you absorb all of it, in fact most of the mana flows through, escaping your grasp. Rather than the passive absorption you've done till now, you believe you could attempt actively absorbing the mana, improving your efficiency.
> Observe the animals. Unlike yourself and the plants, these animals are quick-quick, living fast and dying fast. You cannot help but be fascinated, perhaps you could learn something interesting if you pay close attention to their flashing lifetimes?
> The gentle thrum of sap, leaves catching the energy of the sun. Plants are like you, yet not. You feel the gentle slow life of the vines climbing up your sides. Perhaps you could attempt to do something with it? Drain it? Bolster it? (Specify what to do with plants)
> Study the Leylines. You're sure you've only just scratched the surface of these red lines. You think you might be able to stretch your awareness along the lines, exploring more of the intricate web that lies beyond your senses.
> Something Else?

You have: 2/?? Mana
Mana Income: 1 Mana/decade
You weigh: 10 metric tonnes

For now, we should store mana and figure out better ways to absorb it. Rolling down towards the greater concentration doesn't do us any good if we use all our mana and miss, or if we can't absorb it because it's no longer flowing through us.

      Time Passes

> Active Absorption of Mana

Slowly you condense your will inside your form, forming a...filter of sorts, it impedes the flow of the mana, slowing it down, giving you more time to absorb of it, and giving you more to absorb from as the mana pools up. However, the filter quickly disintegrates without your frequent inspection and maintenance, the non-absorbed, pooled mana eating away at it like acid. While you still have a long way to go, this is a massive leap forward in your ability to absorb mana.

[Learnt how to make Mana Impeders, require frequent maintenance. Double Mana income if you have an Impeder]

> Explore Leylines

Hesitantly, you send a small mental probe down your leyline, like someone dipping their toes in the swimming pool. When this fails to achieve anything, you cautiously invest more and more of your awareness into the leyline, slowly following it downstream. You find it next to impossible go against the stream with this method, so just follow the natural paths of the mana. You feel your consciousness getting stretched out, spreading thinner and thinner. The world outside the leyline gets attenuated the further you go. Streaks of jungle, a flash of frothing water, a sun-bleached skeleton, a cave in a cliff-face.

Lines converge, until finally you finally you're getting buffeted on all sides in a rope of mana, as thick around as one of the trunks of the young trees around you. A particularly wild surge disrupts your concentration, snapping your mind back to your body. You're left somewhat rattled, a slight jitter coursing through you. You'll have to recover before attempting that again.

[Improved Knowledge of Leyline Web. Learnt Leyline Divination]

What do you do over the next decade? (Pick Two)

> Continue experimenting (what? include mana used)
> You can spend time maintaining the Mana Impeder, hopefully refining it further in the process.
> Expand the Mana Impeder. Enlarging the scale of the Mana Impeder would net you another 2 Mana income, but maintaining the both of them would take up all of your concentration and attention.
> Observe the animals. Unlike yourself and the plants, these animals are quick quick, living fast and dying fast.
Drain it? Bolster it? (Specify what to do with plant energy)
> Going upstream. If you spent mana to counteract the flow you might be able to travel up your leyline, possible even discovering its source! (specify how much mana to spend)
> Let's try that again. With practise comes perfection. You could try to travel down the leyline again, hopefully with better results this time. Perhaps you could spend some mana, both to shield you from the buffeting and mitigate the attenuation, so you have a better view of the world beyond the leyline as you travel along it? (If you spend mana, specify how much)
> Something Else?

You have: 4/?? Mana
Mana Income: 1(2 if Impeder is maintained) Mana/decade
You weigh: 10 metric tonnes

      Time Passes

> Observe animals.

The animals flicker across your vision, moving too fast for you to properly observe. You strain yourself, until finally you manage to focus on a tortoise. While slow compared to the rest of the creatures, it's still very fast from your frame of reference. You watch it walk, eat. Withdraw into its shell to frustrate predators. Slowly you get into the mindset of the tortoise, it's daily life becoming like you're own. You-

munch a particularly tasty leaf before walking around the tree to take a nap in a sunspot -

What was that?! You think, you might have... been inside of the animal? This is...intriguing. Belatedly you realize you've involuntarily depleted some of your mana to power the effect you inadvertently initiated.

[Learn Sense Link. -1 Mana]

> Maintain the Mana Impeder.

You maintain the Mana Impeder, testing and tinkering with it. While you have made no notable improvements yet, you feel like you're slowly getting closer to a breakthrough.

What do you do over the next decade? (Pick Two)

> Experimenting (what? include mana used)
> You can spend time maintaining the Mana Impeder, hopefully refining it further in the process.
> Expand the Mana Impeder. Enlarging the scale of the Mana Impeder would net you another 2 Mana income, but maintaining the both of them would take up all of your concentration and attention.
> Speeding up. You have theorized a way you could pump mana into your brain to speed up your "processing" speed, essentially bringing your perception of time closer to that of the animals, allowing you to observe more of them, in greater detail. (Costs 1 Mana)
> The Sense Link bridges the gap between your mind and that of the target animal, sending its sensory input to you. What if you reversed the flow and send something to it instead? Some false memory or sensation? Maybe you could induce artificial terror? This holds potential... (Costs 1 Mana)
> The gentle thrum of sap, leaves catching the energy of the sun. Plants are like you, yet not. You feel the gentle slow life of the vines climbing up your sides. Perhaps you could attempt to do something with it? Drain it? Bolster it? (Specify what to do with plant energy, bolstering requires mana)
> Going upstream. If you spent mana to counteract the flow you might be able to travel up your leyline, possible even discovering its source! (specify how much mana to spend)
> Let's try that again. With practise comes perfection. You could try to travel down the leyline again, hopefully with better results this time. We now have plenty of mana to get to the leyline concentration, but I don't think we can really use it yet.

Maintain the Mana Impeder.

Experimentation: Spend 2 mana trying to alter a nearby leyline flow, preferably into ourselves.
