Forum Move Begins June 14th
« on: June 02, 2008, 04:42:00 am »

As discussed in this thread, we'll be moving over to an SMF forum.  I figured I'd give you a bit of time to iron out any succession game scheduling and other matters, so the move won't begin until Saturday June 14th, two weeks from now, around 7PM forum time.

Members and threads will be preserved, and the old board will be kept around so that you can access your old private messages, but note that due to limitations of the convertor, private messages will not be moved from this board to the new board.

The process may take a few days.  Since this board is so old, I'll actually have to convert between four different boards (UBB 6 -> phpBB2 -> SMF 1 -> SMF 2), and there are doubtless going to be hiccups along the way.  The conversion might not even work properly the first time, so please be patient if something goes wrong.  Janus was nice enough to draw up a theme similar to the DF boards, and we can work with that as issues come up.  So far I'm leaning toward no signature pictures, no displayed post counts and no post-based ranks beyond Escaped Lunatic, if I keep that.  Avatars I'm ambivalent about.  They don't bother me personally, and people seem split on it.  There'll be an option in your profile to hide them in any case, and in light of that I don't think allowing them should be a problem.

Toady has spoken, and all squabbling stopped! Truly, these are the glory days!

This is going to be grand. Is there any way of previewing what it'll look like?

The theme? Here you go:

Don't mind the content (users, boards, posts) as I was viewing it on a test backup of another forum.

Converting doesn't destroy the original, right?  If there's any problems we can just use this as is.  Have you done test runs, yet?

It's great that avatar view can be disabled.  I hope the new board is as good at not logging you out as this one, so I don't have to see them before I log in.

Also, can seeing signatures be disabled?  That would be a great feature which this board lacks.

Toady, will you disable avatars and pictures in signatures to preserve how this forum looks? And we'll need themes that are just like the Curses forum, the Armok I forum, and the Various Nonsense forum.

Also, LCS needs its own forum. It has taken over 99% of the curses forum.

It's nice to see how some people never read the first post of a topic

I wouldn't mind avatars at all, they make it a hell of a lot easier to scan a thread and know who's posting what at a glance.

Sig pics on the other hand cross into a realm of internet addiction that I don't even feel like touching on. Anyone who has 6 hours to spend in Photoshop making a custom sig banner for a forum needs help, and I'll leave it at that.

Looks rather bloated.

I don't see the problem with signature pictures.  They can easily be weeded out by moderators, I'm sure.  I know this is a strange thing to say, but like...  Gamingsteve has picture signatures, and I frequent that forum a ton.  I've never had a problem with a picture in a signature.  It also helps with the "scan-ability" of threads.  And!  It helps to express people's individuality or something...

hah! mount & blade, another indi game i like :P but anyhow.. looks like a good skinjob.. i might suggest flat texturing though, less beveling (as you might notice, the DF board is very much flat :P) its only a couple simple images that need to be modified.. for instance, the one behind 'mount & blade' that gets repeated all along the line.

and as to the 'bloat' see.. thats why they are changing away from this board :P there are not enough features... and so a new board will be bloated with new features.. its hard to know exactly what you will need or wont need untill you have actually used the board, i can see some things disapearing, and some things being added.. SMF is rather nicely designed and easy to manage.

anyhow, complaints are moot at this point.

Theme looks good --quite sleek and in spirit of the original yet modern-- and SMF is a good choise.

I'd like to reiterate my suggestion that the suggestions forum get a few sub-fora: a "golden threads" one where the best threads are moved and regular members can't make new threads; an "solved or implemented" one where obsolete threads are moved; and some specialised sub-fora, where "magic" is the most obvious.
