How do you organize your refuse stockpile to minimize mi
« on: December 01, 2007, 01:37:00 pm »

I've found this design 100% isolate all the dwarfs from contacting miasma:
1. Dig out room for future stockpile (first image)
2. Place a pile as shown on second image
3. Remove all unneeded pile tiles as shown on third image
4. Place doors (fourth image)

Now all miasma locked in it's individual 1x1 room and it's still one stockpile so you can manage it's settings easily

Well... extra space but no miasma contact at all even for refuse haulers.

code:

1:                  2:                 3:
***************     ***************    ***************    ***************
*......*......*     *======*======*    *=....=*=....=*    *=D..D=*=D..D=*
***..*****..***     ***==*****==***    ***..*****..***    ***..*****..***
*......*......*     *======*======*    *=....=*=....=*    *=D..D=*=D..D=*
***..*****..***     ***==*****==***    ***..*****..***    ***..*****..***
*......*......*     *======*======*    *=....=*=....=*    *=D..D=*=D..D=*
***..*****..***     ***==*****==***    ***..*****..***    ***..*****..***
*......*......*     *======*======*    *=....=*=....=*    *=D..D=*=D..D=*
***..*****..***     ***==*****==***    ***..*****..***    ***..*****..***

I just make the passageway leading to the isolated refuse pile have at least 3 180 degree turns.

I basically just build a meat locker.  The only ones who get a blast of foul air are the butchers and peasants, and that's just when they open the door.

But, if it's close to the surface, I'll build a sort of chimney for it to the outside.  That way, it gets considered "outside" by the game, so no miasma is created.

I created a 4x4 pit to throw all my trash in. I also put my prison around the sides. Dwarves REALLY don't want to go to prison in my fortress.

I build a three tile long hallway to the stockpile and put a door in both ends, like an airlock. Works perfectly.

Likewise, 'cept mine's usually 10 tiles, as my stockpiles tend to be 10x10 themselves.

I have, however, notived that miasma doesn't seem to pass through even the first door, when it's opened by dwarves and animals going through.

Anjey's design is more or less the same as what I do myself, except that I have larger center halls (6 wide), and use the center for bone/shell/skull storage, and I do the construction and designation in a different order:

1. Dig out everything.
2. Place doors.
3. Designate stockpiles in the halls for bones/shells/skulls.
4. Designate a stockpile over the whole thing, which will only really be placed on the 1x1 tiles behind doors, since all other space is already occupied by a stockpile or doors. This second stockpile accepts all refuse except bones/shells/skulls.
5. Set the bone/shells/skulls stockpiles to take from the regular refuse stockpiles.

The beauty of this and Anjay's method is that the dwarves will never walk into one of the chambers with miasma in it - they'll put refuse in an empty room and then never go in there again until it has fully decayed. And then (with my setup) they remove the bones/shells/skulls from the 1x1 rooms, freeing the space up for more junk to be deposited to decay in safety.

I have an outside stockpile and a couple of indoor ones with airlock doors.

my refuse stockpile/graveyard is in the middle of my dinning room/workshop area/bedroom. I wonder why my dwarves keep going insane...

My current fortress has a central shaft with many 21x21 floors making up the fortress, with a few exceptions for workshops. The refuse room looks like so:
code:

Miasma doesnt flow diagnolly  :D
The refuse piles are low traffic areas and the safe paths are high traffic. this prevents dwarves from walking over refuse piles except in a few cases (these end up as a last resot anyway).
Only rotting garbage is placed in this stockpile. It is later moved to a different one.

I don't bother, the sad thought for smelling miasma is only -5 and it does not matter how many times they smell it. Even if every dwarf in the fort smells miasma they are all still ecstatic thanks to large rooms and a nice dining room.

I don't normally have huge piles of things rotting anyway.

I'd consider making a chimney to the outside, like Kagus, but there's the whole "emptied and the end of the season" business. Pity.

unless you don't have surface fortification, I find that the best is simply to process meat/fish/skin right at the surface level near the main door.  (I place those in the courtyard of my fort, surrounded by moat).

Reasons for this:
1) Process as they come in, reducing hauling distance.  raw fish/corpse usually comes from surface.

2) All the rot-able stuff stays in open air : raw fish/corpse/raw skin.  After they are processed into "safe-to-store" versions, they can be carried further underground, in batch too sometimes.  As opposed to : send raw stuff underground, then having to transport them back out after they rot.

Originally, I'm all for keeping everything locked up safe and tight underground, but in my most recent game, I am forced to set up a temporary surface camp (all temporary workshops are above ground outside a cave entrance on a side of a cliff, surrounded by a small partial moat that limits access) while my dwarves dig out the underground halls without that much urgency to get the workshops in their final places.  It turns out that butcher's shop and fishery works pretty well at the surface.  I'll even dedicate one surface kitchen only to fat->tallow production while the main underground kitchen concentrates on cooking lavish meals.
