It's not too late! carve fortifications in the walls and have a marksdwarf shoot at it. Just make sure he doesn't overdo it and kill the beast.

Which will be hard with current marksdwarf AI but possible if you limit the marksdwarf's ammo.

Floodgates in front of the fortifications would also do the trick.

Or better yet, double fortifications with the floodgate between them, just make sure the marks dwarf isn't standing where the floodgate is.... Or do you? :)

Found vampire in my fortress few days ago. Quite interesting one also. Has twelve children and no tongue. Killed two useless mini dwarves before I even noticed her. Easy to identify. Her history and relationships very just too large, as well skills. Guess how I dealt with her? Go ahead, guess it. No, I didn't killed her. I used more classical way to deal with her and now... my fortress is immortal...

By mini dwarves, do you mean the children or those adult dwarves hit by the bug where fort born creatures don't grow to full size?

First one. Aren't they quite mini dwarves after all?...

Was just asking since someone referred to the dwarves hit by that bug as mini-dwarves as well. Though it's supposedly fixed by DFhack.

idk, i had the LNP with the fix (one of the reasons i got the LNP) for the growth bug.

my war dogs still get curbstomped by goblins though, with random bruises every once in a while.

there was an ambush during the winter months. three squads showed up, two with ranged leaders and one completely ranged.

my dwarves were still hauling the goblin snatchers that arrive moments before (10 bucks says the goblins pay them as distractions)

luckily, only one mechanic died, though the same cannot be said about my war dogs. nearly all of them gave their lives to protect the marksdwarves behind them, whom easily took care of most of the goblins. hilariously, they actually ran out of bolts and tried to bash them with their crossbows, though at that point, all remaining invaders were unconscious anyway. i should probably equip them with copper crossbows.

i modded the GCS to be trainable and breedable. so far i have 10 of them. i think i might replace my war dogs with them soon.

+ i accidentally killed that FB when a marksdwarf shot it in the brain. shame really, i still don't know what that blood does.

New year in Relicblaze.  (The fort's 14th)

The goblins did back-to-back sieges with another one in winter following up the autumn one.  And the fortress scored a rare "flawless victory"* on the three squads of goblin cavalry and three ogre units.  Got them all sealed into the tunnels and wiped them out.  Combination of marksdwarves, traps, legendary melee troops, and the Water Gun emplacement.

* - AKA "The Dread Pirate Roberts Defense" -- there will be no survivors!

One of the fort's spear masters died of old age and was placed in an already prepared tomb.  (Two levels of tombs for the elite military have been prepared down next to the Magma Sea.  Whether to flood it or not once filled is still a decision to be made.

The Chief Medical Dwarf got moody and made a steel battle axe - The Binder of Curls.   This has been presented to the fort's Militia Commander.  The fort now has its first legendary weapon smith now as well, who can work on a general equipment upgrade.

Also planning on a rearrangement of militia squads.  The legendaries have been cross-training weapons, so some squads will be cross-assigned and consolidated into larger squads of mixed weapons as compared to the usual single weapon type squads.  Crossbows will probably be kept separate, but a few small squads will get upgraded to full steel armor sets from the standard marksdwarf bronze mail sets, and then used as a multi-purpose squad to provide roving fire support for the melee troops.   Going to see how 8-dwarf squads work - each with a minimum of two hammer, two axe, and two spear specialists.  Most of these dwarves have master or better skill with short swords or spear in any case regardless of their main weapon.  (I've noted that while I still see bite and punch attacks I also see secondary weapons used about as often - including a mace dwarf who usually uses a morningstar killing a minotaur with a short sword strike.)

The two-dwarf Guard squad is taking this to an extreme.  They're level 16-20 in Crossbow, sword, axe, hammer, spear, and are now working on Whips.  Might have to start buying arrows off the elves so that they can practice with bows soon.

Beyond that most construction projects are done.  Might excavate a few more rooms with the miners, but for the most part it's picking up goblin bits, decorating items, and arranging to dump as much stuff as possible off on the trade caravans in order to get the items removed.  Also stockpiling bolts for some serious range training for the twenty-five or so cadre dwarves.  They have light armor and weapons, so might as well train them for a few levels before the youngsters come of age and get drafted.  Will also have to start looking at ages and seeing what specialists I might need apprentices for.

First year has gone well in Terrorfrenzy. The green fog clouds have been determined to thrall anything that is exposed to the vile stuff, several flocks of keas and ravens have attacked the same giant sponge for ages, and SOMEHOW bisected it. Now there is a giant sponge upper body zombie in the river, and the ravens and keas (and thralled variations of) were frozen in ice over the winter. No trace of them remains, thankfully.

Trade depot is sealed off from the outside, linking to the edge of the map and fully enclosed. Merchants come and go in total safety.

Must break through the aquifer soon, already had a fey mood that resulted in a very nice gabbro statue, using up the last remains of our initial stone supply.

You could always do fun stuff like forbid his ammo or bow once he does enough damage.

If the original sponge is alive I'd love to see screenshots of a sponge being beaten on by its own zombified upper  half.

i had this idea of creating foxholes connected to underground passages with a retracting bridge over them,

when goblins get close, they get pelted with sweet dwarven hail. still under construction though.

another caravan, another ambush. a lasher squad got stuck out of turret range when their leader got stuck in a cage trap.

really wish i had those foxholes.

Build up towers around the edge of the map, connect them with fortified walkways (basically a floor with fortifications on each side and a roof).  Build a few crossroads between the map edges, and all your marksdwarves can reach every enemy on the map from the safety of a tower in the sky.  As long as no doors exist from the outside world to these towers, and the entrances are deep in your fort, you can safely defend against any enemies.  Even bow enemies will ahve troubles.
