I've not embarked yet, but it will be interesting : elves and goblins are the most powerful races of this world, elves outnumbering dwarves 2 to 1. Two dwarven civilizations have been completely destroyed by goblins (and a few elf raids) and one of the human civilizations was conquered by the elves of the Triangular Queen. Browsing the files, I've seen that about 1/10th of the dwarves settlements have a population of the type "4 dwarves, 1 forgotten beast".
About one tenth of the living dwarves (so about 2000 of them) seem to be prisonners or "adopted" members in dark fortresses, or living with humans.
Too bad we can't send armies from our fortresses -yet. There's a lot of clean up to do.
I'll keep a copy of the world somewhere, so when I am more experienced I will try to reclaim the dwarven civilization that was crashed by demon-led goblins in year 15.

My two forts have reached their limits, and after 200 citizens the fps has dropped into 25. Human city Rivertrapped might continue a bit longer as it is a bit better "performance" vice. Any siege or other form of fun will probly render it into a diashow and make battle mechanics useless (if it's lag issue that military wont fight).

Do you limit the amount of citizens in your fortresses? I might try capping it to 150 next time.

What's the tool for embark screen if I want to ensure the site has iron? I'm a bit tired of constant silver/copper sites...

If you're using dfhack you can type "prospect all" without quotes in the console and check if there's any iron ore on site.

They're standing in a mob and it's in the middle of them. Right there, there are two red arrows pointing right at it.
Check your 'R'eports, da_nang. It looks like they're TRYING to do something there.

So I was auto-designating a small hematite vein next to the volcano.

My miners start to dig, suddenly magma, smoke and !!miners!!.

I don't even know how the hell this happened  ???

That's the problem, they weren't generating any reports. Only the vulture and its target were. The soldiers just stood there.

Yes, they have weapons and the vulture was right next to them on the same z-level so they should have had line of sight. The vulture finally died when it attacked one of my soldiers and subsequently got its head bashed in with a warhammer.

Snapping Turtles are awesome. Not only do I have infinity+2 shells I have all the meat bones and eggs I could ever need. I'm trying to figure out how to make scale usable for leather. If I can figure that out I'll have all of my needs provided by turtles.

I don't know how, but that FB somehow managed to get into the central stair case despite there being no access. MOBILIZE EVERYONE

EDIT3: Why is that no-one wants to hit the FB? They're all hugging the FB, while repeatedly being hit by it and not retaliating.

Been under siege by keas, they just keep hovering overhead where my military can't reach them and scaring everyone who goes outside... Here I thought a good biome would be easier, but I guess that only applies if it's not right next to a jungle and an evil biome...

So I had visit from a werekangaroo that killed two of my migrants. New people? Great, let's make another squad! This dude here killed the werekangaroo, let's make him squad leader. Oh, he's a kid, 3 years old. 0_o

No, I'm not casting for dwarven version of The Real Housewives. To encourage childbirths I drafted all married couples to a squad and put them to train in a small room; after months of initial confusion they just started sparring. I probably shouldn't be this amused reading the combat logs.

So far two babies have been born as a result from all the close action in the barracks.
