So, my above ground, desert colony, who started out with no skills and no items [...] waiting for a trade caravan to arrive so I can trade all these bone and shell crafts [....]
Did you have to wait for a migrant woodcutter to build the craftsdwarves' workshops, or did you have another clever trick?

I just disassembled my wagon at the start to make an axe (1 wood for the axe, 1 for the carpenters shop). From there, getting wood was not a problem; I just assigned a random dwarf to start chopping. He is now a Proficient Woodcutter.

Sweet. It's too bad you can't (without a lucky mood anyway) make a bone pickaxe. You could use the last wood from the caravan to make a butcher's shop and slaughter your dray animals.

After some abstinence started playing again and after some tries found a good embark:
Temperate woodlands with river
1 layer of Sand
1 layer of Peat
1 layer of Clay
5 layers of Limestone/Magnetite/Lignite + some Limonite and Bauxite
5 layers of Marble
Below that Quartzite/Orthoclase/Tetrahedrite, haven't dug much deeper yet.

Way to go for lots of industry.

seed?

 History Seed: 3986888749
 Name Seed: 1323041890
 Creature Seed: 3977072188

But I don't know how to exactly tell you where that site is.

I just managed to seal all the caverns up. Now I'm mining a star-shaped throne room for my future king and building a large aboveground granite fort. I'm also producing lot's of ¤statues¤ and trying to manage all the different industries.

My First Fighter got his nickname: The Confident Nuts of competing. ^^
The dorf must have some legendary balls!

And an Etting walked in 1 of my 4 cage traps.

Then my baron threw a tantrum because we didn't made any windows( we like it dark).
So he attacked his pet peacock(grabbed him by the 3rd and 4rd toe), good times.

Two things:

1. Forgotten Beast syndrome. Random dwarves are getting Down With The Sickness and starting to rot, eventually causing them to suffocate.

2. Caged elf merchant. Arena. Angry cyclops.

EDIT: 3. Holy fuck macros are incredible for mass-trading hundreds of troll fur thongs and sheep wool hoods!

I've been busy salivating over the next release, but since it looks like it'll still be a few weeks, I think I'll go for another fortress (I've been holding off for the next release).

The randomly generated name, Laborlands, seems promising. Strike the Earth!

Wonders never cease! I have discovered actual bituminous coal in a 0.31.25 fort. Never thought I'd live to see the day.

Good thing too, the surface isn't very heavy on trees and I've yet to colonize the caverns.

Grrr. The only times I've ever found coal post-0.31.18 is by cranking the minerals up to the max.

HOLY CRAP! ELF AMBUSH!

It came out of nowhere. There I was, just minding my own business when an elven ambush party starts to make trouble. So, I assigned everyone to the military to try and take care of this threat. EVERYONE BUT ONE PERSON DIED. This one person, know as Atir Adagustuth Gosmernonub Kodor managed to survive and push back the remaining elves. He just would not die. Now he is a master axedwarf and master fighter.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I don't know what the colour coded body areas mean, all I know is he is hurt. Will he survive?

Damn elves. Maybe I should have not clear cut the forest around me :D

First thing I noticed: waterfall! Second thing: there aren't very many evil animals in the evil forest. Just a few zombie turkeys and a skeletal cow moose. Hopefully more migrate in over time.

Getting the farms and basic fort set up, nothing too eventful yet.

The colored parts indicate how much damage he took to those areas. Here's a quick guide to the color coding: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Wound

I can't say whether he'll live or die, but it looks like he didn't take any organ damage so he might have a chance. Can he still walk around without soiling himself with pain?

Clear cutting the forest was the right move. Now just get the magma traps ready.
