I still need to learn how to use magma without killing my own dwarfs first, that is, when and if I find any, considering my dwarf may not survive. Yes, I am still a newb to this game, though not nearly as much when I started off :)

I think if I can build back up again and I can get a pick from some merchants, I'll start digging underground. I will only have one entrance, and it will be loaded with cage traps (gratuitous amounts of cage traps). Then, once I have some elves trapped, I'll drop them into a pit full of hostile monsters (considering I can get any). Otherwise, I will just watch as they starve to death.

Ghostly Fisherdwarf keeps fishing... for eternity.  The dude is carrying around over a hundred raw turtles.

As a dwarf I'd get depressed watching this struggle.
Poor thing has been hit by twelve bolts already and is still not dead, this is only the second half.

Later when I looked over my unit screen I found out that mysteriously every single carp (it were around 10-15) on the map has died.
I have no idea how or when, I just saw them disturbing my dwarfs and got a bit worried, and suddenly they're all dead.
Killed by massive amounts of Capybara vomit?

Build walls around the operator's position on the pump, and give it a door.  Possibly forbid the door intermittently if the dwarf might drown if they try to leave.

How did I miss the existence of this thread?
(Don't attempt to answer that.  Down that path lies ... well I was going to say madness but you all run towards madness as if it was made from chocolate and puppies.  Just forget I said anything.)

Guess where I just embarked?
A haunted forest with hippos, carp, milkfish and giant ants!
Luckily, the ants shouldn't be too much trouble. They're weak for some reason.

Well, I decided to abandon my challenge fort. My poor hero was battered pretty bad and very unhappy, due to injuries, rotting corpses everywhere, not to mention flies and vermin, and for some reason, he was hungry, even though I had a gratuitous amount of food in my stockpile. So, I think I will make a new fort. Any suggestions on where I should go (preferably somewhere challenging, but not impossible)?

A dry, hot desert environment. I was terrified of deserts and other dry areas when I was new in 40d because I couldn't get farming/brewing up in time to survive with so little water. :P

Actually, the fort I just abandoned was in a hot desert region. Went there with no skilled dwarves and no items (really my favorite way to play right now :)). Any other places that might be challenging?

In my own fortress:

GAGOSPOHATA! I stole the cobald merchants' stuff and built a nice pretty red trade depot from their petrified wood block, and as soon as they leave they deconstruct this new depot and run off with that very same block! How devious of them!

So, I think I found a spot. One biome is an sinister glacier with Ice (of course :P), deep metals, and flux stone. The other biome is a calm badlands with shallow clay, very deep soil, aquifer, deep metals, and flux stone. This is good because now I won't start out with having no wood or bushes whatsoever, which will make things a bit easier. I did read up a little bit on evil glaciers and apparently there are blizzard men, so I am going to try and get some walls up as fast as I can. Also, the bit of the river that runs through my embark area is in the badlands biome, so it should melt at least for a little while, but I did read up one getting some usable water from ice. Hopefully, I don't kill myself trying to do it. And unlike my last fort, I am going to bring some items along, as well as give my dwarfs some skills. Lets have some fun!
