As it turns out, my migrant Legendary speardwarf militia commander doesn't even need armor; she did a matrix sequence and dodged every arrow from an Orc ambush consisting of 6 boworcs and a spearmaster, danced around the spear master, cut down three of the archers, turned, stabbed the spearmaster twice, and then chased the other archers off the map. Zero hits on her. And here I was worried about not having proper equipment.

Three consecutive failures at a fort in an Evil region. I mean, all I need is a foothold until 2 waves of migrants come, but noooooo, the first time zombie harpies kill, the second time a smoke husk ox pwns everyone. Third time, again zombie creature...

D:

Just a foothold! This would all have been prevented if the wagon didn't bring two pack animals.

Currently have a perma-hospital-ridden woodworker in my fortress.

Not sure what to do.

Currently have a perma-hospital-ridden woodworker in my fortress.

Not sure how to kill him.

Fix'd

Application of magma, drowning, or captured goblins should suffice.

In a hospital? lol. Well. Maybe the goblin.
Or I could just starve him.

The Doomsday Device, of course.

The Doomsday Device, of course.

Still unbuilt, given that I want to finish my hydroelectric facility beforehand. I also need to dig out the pumpstack and build my storage tanks in low orbit. But that beauty is going to be saved for it.

Ah yes, the LOMC. A truly magnificent feat of dwarven engineering.

Another new fortress, trying out something a little different (for me at least)...

Having gotten a little tired of the situations where you get "Urist McHauler cancels Store Item: Interrupted by <thief/snatcher/ambusher/low-flying budgie> x200", I've militarised my hauling operations.

Each new migrant is carefully assessed to determine the best use of their skills, and then either a) has all hauling labours disabled (in the rare case they have a skill I want), b) is given a membership to the fortress' Pump Gym (if they are promising melee dwarves or female, to keep them from dual-wielding babies into battle), or c) given a crossbow and told which end to point at the enemy (all haulers).

This has had some interesting results so far - most thieves that bump into my conga line of wood haulers don't make it more than a few paces before being riddled with bolts, and when sieges strike, everyone is summoned into the fortress walls, and the resulting firepower gives even Elite melee-goblins cause for concern.

One small problem with this is that ambush squads tend to be able to kill any hauler that's become isolated - in groups, the weight of fire usually makes the goblins pause (due to massive hemorrhaging) long enough for help to arrive, or the haulers to run away... if they can be persuaded that they aren't Urist McRambo.

I'm thinking with future work along these lines it may be more useful to have fully-armoured melee dwarves to take on this role - less use of consumables (I have a fairly steady deforestation operation going to supply my squads), and better survivability in melee. Only question is how to train them effectively; I'm considering doing a little testing using my Masonry team as part-time Hammerdwarves to find out how larger squads impact on melee training.

Oh, and I've previously voiced my suspicion that the elves are collaborating with the goblins - in the first battles at this fort, I was proved right beyond doubt, as the goblin squads forming the first ambushers were led by elves! Needless to say they were cordially invited to leave, and when they didn't they were shot repeatedly.

Turned out my first elf leather, and got lucky enough for a mooded weaponsmith to use some in an artifact crossbow. :))

Lost: RabbitHut the Grass-Devourer
07) The Sponge has Spoken

Current: RabbitHut the Holy House
01) Start
02) Dwarf Down, Population Up
03) Light at the End of the Tunnel
04) The Big Wave
05) Garbage Improvement
06) Were Woof
07) What the hell is olivine?

So my general dwarf area is in stone, under the aquifer.
And work continues on the crab-trap garbage chute to make it automated.
So everything looks good inside.

Outside though, we have one finalist from the last migrant wave.
I think the head-count was ~14 migrants, no kids, and about 9 made it inside and 4 died outside.
That leaves Feb to tank the zombies.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As as I was digging, I found a cavern layer at Z-28 !!
How fortunate it's not at Z-90 like the last fort.
I also hit Olivine ... hmm, it doesn't seem so bad on the wiki.

So I guess of my embark site
: Shallow Metals - Silver and Graphite ?
: Deep Metals - Silver and Olivine
: Flux - Unknown

Oh, hey, elves.
I don't have enough wrestlers or supplies to bother letting you inside.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The only reason I don't want them to die is because I don't want to clean-up after their corpses.
I've got 5 Dwarf-Corpses and ~6 other corpses, but I don't want the numbers to get out-of-hand.

Question: What happens when you give a legendary speardwarf a glaive and let her go wild on a couple squads of goblins?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Of course, now I'm going to regret that, because DFhack isn't updated yet. Time to sell the bloodstained rags to the humans before they leave, then.
