Make her your militia commander and duchess?

Too late.
My main military force consists of dwarves barely out of childhood. They'll either have long, illustrious careers or short lives as pin-cushions.
And my duchess was the first kid to reach adulthood at the fortress.

If my duchess meets an unfortunate end due to rocks falling from the sky or similar, will she be replaced?

Saying that, in the meantime I've given her a rather lovely room and made her leader of a secondary unit of reserves made up of fellow rangers. In addition, I've given her the artifact wild boar bone crossbow someone made as well as an artifact iron breastplate made by someone else.
Only seems right really.

New fort is going well, everything seems to be in order, except for a lack of any metal other than silver, and one slight problem.
Everything was going very smoothly until my bookkeeper walked into his room while I was overseeing the excavation of a native silver vein and suddenly I get the message that he had found his wife lying there dead and drained of all bodily fluids.  To the furthest of my knowledge he's the only one who was near the area, but then he wouldn't have reported it if it was him and he spends almost all his time in his room, so the vampire must have been pretty quick to catch her.
I think I've found it, the dwarf I suspect has close to thirty past civilizations joined, is there any way to test for sure?

Recruit the dwarf and seal him in a room for a year.

If he starves to death, he was innocent.

Just had another siege. A kid died, a stonecrafter died, some determined woodcutters died, a bunch of traders and an arseload of goblins died.

At the same time as a HM woodcutter having a mood, made a decent native gold earring.

Best fight of the siege was a duel between an adept swordsdwarf with a masterful steel short sword who had scored 5 kills in a previous battle and 3 more in this one. He dueled a goblin axelord.

Fight went like this:

*dwarf cuts off goblin's foot*
*dwarf cuts off other foot*
*dwarf kicks now-shorter goblin in the skull, tearing the brain yadda yadda*

New fort's premise is to happily make everyone legendary fighters with training rooms, and then send them back into the fort to mingle and do work. Bookpolish, strike the earth!

Well, I found that there is a wereelk in the area. She ran around, killed a bunch of war dogs and our carpenter, and turned back into a dwarf. Her name is Atir Divineobscure, she's blinking legendary, and I sort've wish I could keep her for scientific purposes. Shame she escaped.

I'm carving a 3d-fort too, and finally discovered the usefulness of rock pots. This is going to be a successful fort I'm sure.

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

Terrifying embark with lots of flying undead, a multi-level aquifer, and (according to the prospect take) evil caverns. Let do this.  :D

Reclaiming an old fort. Abandoned the one before and didn't have to worry about clothes strewn all over the place.
Hoping I have enough time for adequate defenses to be build now.

Not sure what to do with these floodgates now, though. They're just taking up useful stockpile space.

EDIT: Guess I'll just idle while my minions start sorting things into neat stockpiles. I'll get back to the game when Idlers start going above 0.

EDIT: Got a ghost going around, can't find corpse, and NO ONE'S ENGRAVING THE SLAB!
Am I ticking the right labor?

Or do I need a guy with engraving in his title?

They'll get to it as-long-as you got engraving ticked.
However I've heard you can't commemorate dwarves from forts past.

Good luck.
Lost a bunch of RabbitHuts to those.

Watch out for the zombie livestock. The skin and the hair is fine, but a full livestock corpse is bad.

Draining a 4-tile river... Been a year, still draining...

Can't wait to drain the 26-tile major river it waterfalls into.

My fort imported from 34.02 to 34.04 finally died when a ghostly dwarf necromancer arose and started a zombie spiral that led to total extinction. Fun. Onwards to a new 34.05 fort!

I commemorated this one. :O But I had to rebuild the craftdwarf's shop. Guessing it's a manager thing.

I haven't gotten vampires yet, buuuut...
In 34.02, I see stuff like "dog blood barrel" and stuff.

Here's something for the !!SCIENCE!! folks. Would having barrels of blood around help dwarfs and dwarfettes stricken with vampirism avoid murdering others?

EDIT:
My axedwarf just did something epic. :D

He grabbed a goblin by the throat then ripped his throat out, then later scratched at the goblin's arm or hand one, and tore skin off.

The bad, the goblin, before bleeding to death, managed to get a shot in at his leg, chipping the bone and severing a nerve.
He can't stand anymore. :(

A crutch and some bone setting/surgury will fix that problem. I don't think he'll be able to use a shield anymore though, but he can stomp ass with the crutch!

Isn't dwarven medical care great?
