I've just assigned my 414 animals (and growing) to separate cages. I had them all lumped in together in a 31x31 pen. The 'splosion' was enough to make me ask myself what the heck I was thinking in the first place. So, I quickly placed a number of cages in the pen room and started the assigning of animals to all the cages.

I suppose I should mention that I have a dragon breeding program as well and yes they were also assigned to a separate cage. Imagine my surprise when I noticed my legendary dining hall filled with animals of all sorts. This is the dining hall flanked on both sides with barrel after barrel of booze. The very same dining hall filled with animals... and dragons... fire breathing dragons.

At the moment, I'm praying fervently that no gremlins pop up.

I started my habitual 'colonise the caverns - with cats' project to keep the in-fort population under control. Making a 1x1 pasture on top of the lever-operated hatch even allows dumping dwarf-owning cats into the caves. And by golly, did that solve my cat problems! Only in a somewhat more thorough fashion than i had intended: the landing zone was a bit cramped, so they wouldn't properly un-stack. At one point i had something like 20 cats sitting in a single tile. It took a year or two until they had spread out enough that i wasn't getting 'missing' notices every month from permanent cat-fights.

Then, a year later, i started getting new 'missing' notices in rapid succession. The cats had spread out enough to attract the attention of wandering trolls. Perhaps starting the colony in the first cavern level instead of the second would have helped...

I'll have to plan my next animal kingdom a bit better - as a first step, use a mushroom-growing cavern and tip in some yaks or so to serve as basic protection for the squishier denizens.

So, my duchess, who has had many strange problems ever since she got infected by an FB system some years ago, got into this bugged state where she was stuck in the "conduct meeting" job but would never actually talk to the diplomat. I tried isolating her from the diplomat, to no effect, then murdering the diplomat. which probably would've worked had there not been an outpost liaison waiting for his meeting, too. At that point I gave up and soon forgot about it.

A few seasons later, I got a warning that my duchess was throwing a tantrum (waah, other people have nice bedrooms, too...). What does she do? She chucks a rock at the wall, storms into her office, and has that goddamn meeting, while still tantruming. I guess some dwarves have funny ways of dealing with stress...

Magma pump stack completed. Managed to power it using a large number of water wheels a distance away, and brought the power via raised axles, meaning I have built modern power lines in DF.

The forgotten beasts in the cavarns are starting to become a problem, though. I'm getting jumped by so many kaiju that I'm considering calling Ultraman and Godzilla to see if they want to team up.

So, again I tried to get everything right this time.

[Disclaimer:
I play a modded DF that relies heavily on some dfhack features,

- workflow (sorry, is there really any other way to manage industry in a big fortress)
- cleanowned to take old clothing away from my dorfs to try and keep item count down (for FPS)
- autobutcher to manage pig/dog stock.

I try to keep away from everything else. For example autodump is a no-go.

Also, Dwarfen Higher Learning Mod (Doctors) and binpatch hospital-overstocking.]

The Fortress of Lordposts was founded in the year 5. Population Limit was set to 10, so I got the first (two?) immigration waves until the caravan arrives and had to work from there. No more immigrants.

Today is the 13th Limestone in the year of 56. I had this feeling that everything was running too smooth.

81 adult dwarfs + shitloads of children. Fully self sufficient (tree farms, legendary clear glass makers, a competent (Proficient+) team of 4 doctors, Military of 17 steel everything Axedwarfes (10 of them Axe Lords) + 2 full squads of militia crossbowmen (Mason Squad + Farmers Squad, all male).

The invasions so far didn't make it to the main gate because of the crossbowmen. In total, 4 humans made it through in a couple of invasions. They ended up in the barracks of said Axe Lords.

2 years ago, a Hydra ran into one of the cage traps around the main entrance. I tamed it.

So when the humans came yet again, I left the door open, called crossbows to positions, sat and watched. Nil Uzolkan has been quite content lately. She tends to stretch out when she's bored.

One of the farmer crossbowmen decides she's out of ammo and could hit those humans much better bashing them in the head with her crossbow. I realize this when she's already out of support range for the others, 25+ fields from the gate.

I pause the game and take a look. Invasion is down to 5 humans, 2 of them having bolts sticking in them. Axe Lords go take em. Deduk Daggerdefense the Dangerous  Amusement of Trading (seriously)(one of the original 7, the one with teacher skill) is first out the door.

The Militia Commander hacks the Human Crossbowman in the upper body with his Ebalmothkat Telin Okun tearing apart  the muscle and tearing apart the heart through the ( {large rope reed fiber cloak})!
an artery has been opened by the attack!
a major artery in the heart has been opened by the attack!
The Dragon Abli Usmokeve Kara Rulu has come! A gigantic reptilian creature. It is magical and can breath fire. These monsters can live for thousands of years.

Step one, turn off pumpstack.

Step two, create floodgate/bridge in the back of one of the stack layers.

Step three, link it up and channel to cavern.

Step four, solve most of your problems.

UPDATE:

I started digging my fort near the magma sea and then wanted a safe route to get to the iron near the surface (my entrance is pretty much a staircase down which needs to be sealed.) Dug into an underground lake... forges are flooded... but at least the staircase drains into the magmasea so no one drown. Lesson: Count your blessings.

DOUBLE UPDATE:
Well Troglodytes started streaming in and the other water drains resulted in more flooding..... Plan B: Reclaim this mess with armed squad

A quiet year without significant projects, just a bit of housekeeping at the isolated fort.

At long last, the final militiadwarf of the current batch reached elite status - a week before the end of year. He'd been lagging behind because in his training squad, sparring kept bugging out: the trainer's a legendary teacher but has been training single recruits so far and has little supplementary skills, so once the students' skills started ramping up, _they_ began giving lessons, wasting time like nobody's business. Consequently, the slower student took almost three years to get from 'expert' to 'great' at full-on training without breaks. Both students in the other squad have been legendary for quite a while now.

The limited surface breach was a full success - some surface crops and a bee colony could be secured to lay the foundations for a rope reed textile industry and mead as another drink. No pesky outpost liaisons got in (none of the... 31 liaisons right now). The elven caravan was let in and a farmer got novice appraiser skill, so we know our fort stands at ~32M value. We also got rid of a ton of masterwork totems and old socks - all granted as gifts, we're not going to trade. (Old clothes are the bane of isolated forts, getting rid of them without trading is painfully slow and awkward.)

All five couples picked this year were successfully married before the first of Granite. 239 dwarfs, of which 111 are adult; 222 were born in the fort. The first true fourth-generation dwarf was born this year, a baby boy.

Mothramavuz has suffered a death to christen it's magma  discovery. A miner bled out when a little magma got on him. I doused the fire with dfhack if only to keep him from smoking up the place while he bled on everything. Why? He thought standing in the channel meant for magma while he was digging out a hunk of floor space for a forge was a smart idea. He has since been replaced by a gem cutter who wasn't doing anything and happened to be nearby. He's been interred as of the writing of this.

Thanks to Obok getting torn skin from being shanked by a kobold (Why she wasn't wearing her greaves I'll never know; she still dismembered the 'bold in question though,) she's finally had the rotten skin on her breasts excised. I also neglected to notice that under her tutelage  and the constant fighting, she's turned three know-nothing recruits who had zero fighting skills into master bladesmen, them having long since become Legendary Swordsdwarves.

Also I have no idea how this guy managed this since there was no access to that spot.

Back to Relicblaze after a 2-week hiatus (vacation!).

And things are pretty quiet.  A few FB turn up and get spiked in the caverns - and add heavily to the fort's meat reserves.  (One benefit of spiking them rather than dropping a cave-in on them is getting to butcher some of them.)

When the liaison shows up with the autumn caravan some melee squads are sent out to escort him in, while another squad sweeps the other tunnel as a precaution.  Five goblin snatchers are discovered in various tunnels and dispatched.  After the liaison gets into the fortress the hammer and sword squads hangout near a tunnel intersection to keep an eye for more intruders.

They soon discover a goblin ambush team in the tunnel and essentially ambush and destroy it.  From there they travel towards the surface to intercept another ambush team spotted on the surface taking pot shots at dwarves on the roof of the keep.  The squad sweeping the other tunnel gets sent that way as well - but it never gets there due to meeting another goblin ambush.   :o

Which turns into three legendary melee dwarves verses a half dozen hammer and one spear goblin.  And is soon seven goblin corpses.

The third set of goblins on the surface get caught by marksdwarf fire and retreat right into the emerging melee dwarves.  Their bodies are soon scattered in the snow until workers get around to hauling the corpses off to the dump.

Back to training and building improvements.  Tombs are in place for the garrison and the original seven settlers.  Also giving the various militia squads their own separate barracks rooms now instead of clustering them around armor stands in open areas.  Three of the marksdwarf squads are using more distant training locations since it puts them in good position to main various fortifications in case of attack.

The only other excitement was having the mayor throwing tantrums over rotting clothes.  He started two fist fights and also threw a booze barrel half-way across the dining room.  Once he calmed down he was drafted into a inactive militia squad and issued a set of training armor.  That should keep him satisfied for the near future at least.  (Might be time to draft the remaining dwarves into training units, give them armor, verify that sufficient new clothing is available, and then use DFHack for a mass worn clothing collection effort.)

After my last 2-3 hunters had "incidents" involving various enemies, i required some more, so i chucked therapist and selected the best 2 which had nothing better to do.
Then realized one of them had a baby and on her first trek had it stolen. I was expecting the mother to be distraught and go crazy...
instead she didn't give a sh*t, no bad thoughts or anything, i checked therapist, all dwarves are happy if not ecstatic, wtf!?
I give her a year before she gets a new baby, i swear this fort is like that, it's like when anyone dies "bah, we'll get a new one". There's about 4 families in here, dont think anyones excluded in those 4. Seeing i get a death or two each year to wandering around on the surface i think my entire fort is "doesn't care about much any more"

Been going 5-6 years now, just got some fun animals to try (masterwork version, drow spiders faedogs and such). Got most of the fortress defense invaders enabled, so not doing too badly seeing i have 0 fort defense other than military (excluding the fact i've built a wall around it)

Dear Urist McStockpileDrone
I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

Decided to embark in a terrifying/haunted/untamed wilderness area, on a small river.

Nice green clouds drift by every so often, no idea what they do yet. Giant sponges and sponge men reside in the river and the ever-present clouds of skeletal ravens fly by.

30 seconds into the embark, the ravens show up and make a beeline for my wagon... only to spot the Giant Sponge in the river, and decide it looks more tasty than my dwarves.

Now I have 8 ravens constantly attacking the sponge, interrupting a few jobs on the surface but blocking any other spawns from coming in. So its a bit of a blessing in this beautiful locale.

Ugh. So here I thought that other civs were just far away and taking a while to get to my (granted, pretty isolated) fortress. But just now, I double-checked and, as it turns out, I forgot to check the civs screen before embark and due to a quirk in local geography my only neighbors are dwarves.

Which means I've been setting up my huge magma pumpstack (which was eventually to provide not only for convenient magma forging but also for a massive reservoir in the shape of an engraved cast-obsidian upside-down pyramid of doomy dooms of doom) and the tremendous, aquifer-based generator for it...but no goblins, elves or humans will come to the inaugural ceremonies...and it's just not the same using dwarves as your ritual sacrifices to the vicious volcano god your dwarves have already sacrificed life, limb and FPS to create.

Oh, and a hunter brought down a hydra somehow. Been placing masterful, gem- and hydra-bone-encrusted hydra-skull totems at key locations around the fort.
