I'm going to shamelessly rip off your full-name-replacement thing

Me too, for my next major fort. Figuring out all the familial lines would be pretty hard in either of my two current fortresses. (And by hard I mean time consuming.)

Each dwarf means so much more when you go to all the trouble of keeping their names straight.

I have found an incredibly deadly enemy.

Apparently when obsidianizing things, burning lignite can be trapped in the obsidian...and continue burning when you mine it out.

I lost five miners and tantrum-spiraled away 130ish of my 150ish citizens.

Steelstaff, Year 127, 1st year of settlement, midwinter, 21 dorfs.

Things were going pretty good. Then the founding carpenter went into a fey mood and demanded silk cloth. The miners dug a little tunnel into the first cavern to collect webs, and literally only moments after the cavern was opened...

Well, troll in the empty hole where the bedrooms would be, to be specific. A stray war dog valiantly chased it around for a while as a militia was hastily prepared. The war dog got pummeled to death and the troll moved on to the workshops to harass a mason before the two miners got off their bums, stopped drinking, and went to pick the troll to death.

The two launched a decently coordinated assault; both dwarves appeared to focus on crippling the speedier troll's legs. Momuz had bad luck and got into a bearhug with the troll before his buddy Kadol arrived to help. After the troll was crippled they continued picking(ha pun) at its limbs for a while, as if neither dwarf really was confident enough to kill the beast. Then Momuz suddenly and brutally went to town. He promptly spilled the troll's guts before lodging the pick in its upper body, rupturing multiple organs and twisting his pick into the troll's innards before finally caving the beast's skull in. Kadol didn't even get another attack in.

Momuz Goldsyrups, the very weak, sincere, and slow to anger miner just brutally murdered a troll and saved the day. I had my bets on his buddy Kadol Workclimates. Anyway, good for Momuz. Didn't think he had it in him. The only casualty was a stray war dog, and various bruises on some dwarfs. Thank Toady for cloaks.

Back to work, then. Gonna set up some cage traps and a drawbridge so there won't be more wild troll incursions.

My Current fort is just over a year old and dealing with pesky kobold thieves. I'm trying to get my military dorfs up to snuff for fighting but it's slow work. Still digging out my massive bedroom level and soon as that's done I'm digging down to magma for my forges so I can get weapon and armor production going. Right now trying to get some silver for making war hammers. The army killed two badger women and a kobold thief. War dogs sadly do not last long as I currently only have one left. Food and drink stocks are risky but farms are going full tilt and egg production is at full steam. My milk goats though are outside and I fear a prolonged siege will destroy them. Hopefully my early world fort (only in year 7) will turn out as a fun one.

Sarvesh Abyssink-Twinklingdiamond has been ecstatic lately. She gained a sibling lately.

Rakust Abyssink-Twinklingdiamond is 16 days old, born on the 17th of Moonstone in the year 221.

Lielac has been quite content lately. She has contemplated portmanteau surnames lately. She has pondered dwarven familial relationships lately. She wants to ask VerdantSF a question.

Oh, also there's a werellama. Whaddever.

ON the @VerdantSF question: you've got an obscenely long-lived fort, right? I'd like to check out the familial relationships there, because the wiki is under the impression that only royalty has grandparents, uncles/aunts, nieces/nephews, or cousins, and I have two walking disagreements. Well, one, because Sarvesh just grew to become a child, but whatever. Rakust still exists.

Also, I did away with the numbering of childerbrats. Too much of a pain.

Well, he went with patriarchal due to his current monarch being male, with the family name going back to the farthest observable male family member in fort mode. For me this is usually maybe two generations back. Femdorfs who marry take ona hyphenated name of thier original and thier husband's surname while the kiddies are named with the father's surname. Any relative who migrate then take on whatever the in-fort established surname is for the whole family to save the headache of renaming large numbers of dwarves.

After I unpause, a dwarf goes moody and claims a forge. He cries for silver bars, and thankfully I had traded a silver nugget earlier. So I unforbid one. He makes a big silver boot. He must plan to do some ass kicking. But sadly that must wait, because my legendary axedwarves are only adequate kickers. Even if they got creative, and say, put the boot on their head. But they're only adequate misc object users too, so they wouldn't do much better.

Maybe I'll just end up putting the boot in a minecart.

I went with matrilineal surnames because there really aren't enough matriarchies around, but it does turn out that my current monarch is a queen. For me it works like this:

Dwarves without in-fortress parents take on the translation of their surname. Children of these dwarves take and keep their mother's surname. Grandchildren take on a hyphenated name, although I might start doing things like "Sarvesh Abyss-Twinkling" instead of "Sarvesh Abyssink-Twinklingdiamond" or give in and do the matrilineal thing because when I finally get great-grand children oh fucking god. But I want a way to distinguish between "yet another of Minkot's brood" (she's still at 20 kids but her youngest is 9 months old, and her children are more than half the native-borns) and "another grandkid! W00T!"

... Maybe I'll go with bilineal desce--

11th Obsidian, 221

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

--descent like I do with grandkids. Then all of Minkot Abysssink and Inod Shakenchanneled's kids will be Abyss-Shaken, and the late Id Twinklingdiamond and Cilob Paddlemirror's Twinkling-Paddle, and then Sarvesh and Rakust will be Abyss-Twinkling because it always takes the first half of the name and the mother's name-part goes first. So it'll be sort of matrilineal. Minkot is gonna have so many people who can trace their ancestry to her...

Also, Sarvesh got possessed on 2nd Obsidian and is now scampering around getting stuff.

Edit: Nope, hyphenated names look ugly, and frankly Minkot deserves to lord it over the rest of the fortress because she's a friggin' matriarch. (I have three living, by the way. Minkot of Abyssink, Alath of Utteredinks, and Ushat I of Holeportals. Id of Twinklingdiamond was my only matriarch who married in-fort and left 7 children [2 of which are dead], while Minkot, Alath, and Ushat have 20, 20, and 17. )

Pretty sure I'm just gonna go with a patriarchal list. I can't mod the raws to follow the correct trends, but every male dwarf who enters the fort will grant his name to his familial line from then on down. His wife will have to deal with it.

I think I'll do English translations, too, since dwarvish requires special characters that escape my ability to input. Can someone direct me to a dwarven dictionary (for the first names)?

I can get you a pastebin of the edited language file from Phoebus that doesn't have any diacritics so you can search it!

Speaking of no diacritics, that's just what I do. ่rith becomes Erith and such.

My forts that went generational are also thoroughly matrilineal. Just seems natural to me: it's the mothers who get all the socialising benefits from raising the kids and they're the ones followed around by their spawn all the time.

It mainly happens in the civilian forts (with invaders off), but one of the military installations also came to the point where the fort-born dwarfs started marrying and having kids of their own; it was actually part of the "trying out military stuff" scheme, because as per usual the population cap was so low i depended on growing my own dwarfs to get over the invasion threshold.

The furthest i've gotten was in a totally isolated no-invaders fort that grew to almost 250 from the 17 we had at the end of year one, entirely through fort-born dwarfs. And that reached the point where the grand-children started having their own kids. I tried untangling the family trees a few times, but it just wasn't feasible.

VerdantSF's been much more professional about it, though, keeping proper track of family lines and going long enough to see deaths from old age; i shelved my fort(x) out of boredom and FPS decay after fifty fort years or so.

(x) that is, moved the folder over to the "archive" subdirectory. It could be re-activated at any time.

Overseer brain blar. Honeymoon suites married three couples last year. Husband of Utteredinks matriarch died this Granite. No daughters married, though 3 have lovers. Active names are Holeportals (matriarch), Abyssink (matriach, Likot, Id),  Twinklingdiamond (Cerol matriarch). Suites married Likot, Cerol, Id. Holeportals matriarch 99 and husband 102; also, apparently another native-married couple. Abyssink matriarch 127, husband 131. Twinklingdiamond daughter-matriarch 19, husband 18.

... Maybe I'll make Cerol matriarch, since mama Id Twinklingdiamond is dead. She is eldest daughter.

Yes, Cerol is now matriarch. Id is Grandmama Twinklingdiamond.

Killed 3 FBs in one cave-in back in Obsidian because too lazy to clear them out as they arrived. Leech, panda, pterodactyl.

Sarvesh has two little brothers now. Rakust kidlet now, Sakzul born 26th Opal 222. Also she has two cousins; different parents.

I've been contemplating genealogy software tailored to dwarf fortress. Want to be able to have unconnected dwarves on the same "page" and connect them later. Want DF calender, ability to input fort start date and/or world generation length. Wish DFHack forumdwarves worked on units screen, relationships screen, others. Brain hates me and typing out all those names and screwing around manually moving them around like in an image or something'll make me go stark raving.

... Also contemplating temporary insanity, particularly melancholy, and dwarven mental health care, because I'm enough obsessed with this damn game that in the middle of a depressive episode I'm contemplating how Dwarf Fortress could... thing... apply? implement? I think implement it. I want to see such fun things as that. Alternate between vicious eugenics programs that I would rail against in real life and caring for my depressed dwarves with all the things I can. Entertain myself with being frustrated at them not caring about the gorgeous statues from their favorite material of their favorite animals because depression is basically like the DFHack misery command only it blunts the happy thoughts too or even distorts them into bad thoughts because it's basically your brain going "fuck this shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit".

... I need to go to bed, this is turning into a suggestions post.

... still want mental illness in the game in a less rapidly lethal format, it could be deeply entertaining, like a syndrome of sorts that just... pops up and good luck figuring out why your best glassmaker has felt incredible self-hatred lately~

no seriously i need to bed. g'nai folks. ... morning. thing. the lack of sunlight probably doesn't help but it's glubbing winter i am not going outside

edit: and social anxiety. why is that dwarf hiding in her room and cancelling jobs: interrupted by fellow dwarf? ♪ serious anxiety issues ♪
