Because I tend not to intentionally kill off dwarves or animals unless I need meat. I can constantly keep getting milk/cheese/wool/eggs from them if I keep them alive.

I do not slaughter dwarves either unless they are nobles making horrible mandates or tantrum risks, but population caps max them out at 200, and animals can be kept only at the levels needed to provide for those 200. Farming is too piss easy in DF and it is very easy to be overflowing with food.

It just seems strange that players think of FPS death as inevitable when a fort's growth can stop at a sensible level.

FPS death ALSO happens at 60 dwarves, you know...

My clothier is now legendary and he made a bulky alpaca wool glove. Also a low-level blacksmith died of old age when spring came.

I have decided that I will use my nearly 1000 lead bars to make blocks and build a lead pyramid.

A weremouse attacked during harvest in late spring
He killed several animals before taking out two plant gatherers
Then my military got to it, aided by 4 other civilians who all beat it to death.

3 dead dwarves and 4 critically injured.
And now on watch for were dwarves

Too many poults and gooslings.
Maybe I should chain them up and use them as distractions when goblins come.

First fort with a tower as a neighbor, and things are going well. I get one migrant wave before the first fall caravan, bringing me up to twelve dwarves. Caravan comes, and I buy a yak bull to go with the female I had on embark. Next migrant wave pushes me to twenty-one dwarves.

Undead siege ensues. Thirty-eight mixed elves, humans, dwarves, and goblins are outside, so I bring everyone inside and raise the bridge. Decide it's a good time to start training a second squad of three dwarves and look for magma. My 1x1 staircase misses every cavern layer and the magma sea. Lose two miners when I go looking for magma and find an underground lake instead. Despite all that, I'm laying out my magma workstations another first. Eventually, I'll go get those squatters off my lawn...

Relicshield, pop. 185
Late Winter of 361 (Year 110)

The Evils of Spray tried to ambush the squad guarding the northern trade tunnels. The mace goblin squad came face to face with Commander Dishmab who also happens to be partial to maces.  Wielding the lead artifact mace, Drumseer the Contemptible Loot, Dishmab increased her kill count to 360.

A forgotten beast has appeared
It is made of flame, is bloated, and has large mandibles

It's at the bottom of a pit so I have no idea if I can get to it or if it can get to us

So this is my first forgotten beast (I've taught titans before though, I guess the random generator just likes throwing flames at me) and this is only a couple months after the were attack. Sooo I don't know why but my whole fort is just going unstable. It's halfway through the second(third?) year
I've got a decently armed military and spear/hammer/mace squad as well as an iron outfitted sword squad
The marks squad however is a joke

Flame creatures ( and water, snow mud vomit etc.) are very weak to ranged weapons, a single hit from any sort of ranged attack should end the beast quickly, but melee with one is a definite nono, while the horrid thing will still die quite easily, it will burn just about everything around it to ashes.

I found out the hard way that the same deal goes with web-spitting creatures. NEVER engage them in melee unless your want your legendary swordmasters and axe lords to end up with their heads bitten off.

FPS death ALSO happens at 60 dwarves, you know...

But why? What is increasing the load on the processor?

Pathfinding, mostly. Where FPS death occurs depends heavily on embark size and processor power; I play 2x2 embarks partly because I like to play compact forts and partly because that way I can comfortably play with ~100 dwarves. I don't have a powerful machine at all.

What causes FPS death? EVERYTHING, every tile you mine, every item you make, every dwarf in the fortress, every animal that passes through, every caravan, every goblin, kobold, literally every single thing in the game contributes to eventual FPS death.  Because once it has to be stored, it always has to be stored and that leads to the eventual slowdown.
