There is an interesting philosophical conclusion to be reached here on the relative implications of "fun" depending on perspective.

I've instituted a policy of masterwork-only in terms of military armaments. So far I have 4 squads decked out in nothing but the finest in dwarven steel gear.

Unless it's candy, because the melting ratio on that is so abysmal. Steel items are automatically sorted to either the armor or the melting pile next to the smelters. I have multiple layers made of almost nothing but flux, and medium to large quantities of hematite, limonite, and magnetite on this map.

I've razed all the local goblin settlements save for the dark fortress, which contains a demon master. Many of their attacking forces were taken prisoner, and reside in the SCIENCE LEVEL (not for long *snicker*). The first force to attack the place was soundly massacred, let's see how they do with 40 masterwork-clad Axe Lords knocking on their door.

I sent a squad on a mission years ago and they still aren't back. Are they stuck now? Is there any way to recall them, or write them off?

I don't think there is a report. There's raid missions I sent other squads, but those guys aren't there.

Oh, I just realized they are the only ones with "recover artifact" mission. Those can take very long time, right?

Not sure actually, probably depends on how much it's moved about.

Recover book/artifact can take forever. I think there are still bugs with people returning. We sent a guy after a book and didn't see him for five years. Checked legends viewer and he had basically disappeared. No death, no location.

The way it works, maybe if they die and no report makes it back, you don't get a report back?

Use open-legends to check legends mode, see if you can track down his fate.

I quickly noticed that the starting location being dangerous mixed with dwarven wisdom :

Oh well at least it wasn't our miner or our woodworker so no precious axe or pick was lost this time.

Now to be fair with the dwarves, they weren't the only folks on the map displaying their brain power.
I spotted a group of hamster men that for some reason decided it would be a good idea to suspend themselves above the void and move toward the waterfall and get actually inside of it.
