the treehuggers seldom have anything worth buying.
i sometimes stock up on fruits if i'm running low on food.
otherwise maybe animals, if they got any.

They had some fruit & animals, and I had some useless junk that I didn't really need. Also, my newly appointed broker needed to aquire some skill in appraisal.

that's actually a really good point

Just started playing, and my first ever artifact was... a sheep bone table??
"Obok Esis, "The Pillar of Trotting," a sheep bone table." It menaces with sheep bone spikes.

Yay I guess? It uses sheep bones because I decided to bring some sheep along and he asked for bones. Constructed by a Cheesemonger in a fey mood, who then claimed it as an artefact in the name of their ancestor. Strange. Maybe use it as a side table for morale?

I'm also wondering what my above ground fortifications should look like, along with dorf crop food/booze production balance. Mostly just constructing enough rooms, furnishing them, and figuring out the game in general though. I don't feel like looking up video guides quite yet, I just wanted to play with the wiki and whatever info I might find on forums if I come across it. Started in a serene freshwater marsh and I maxed out embark points, so I should be fine until the goblins come after me one way or another unless I botch my farming somehow which admittedly could happen.

So, I just remembered that I should build some temples for my dwarfs. Went through the list of their deities and this is what my expedition leader worshipped:

"Og: Og is a deity of the Humble Boat. Og most often takes the form of a skeletal female dwarf and is associated with suicide, death, war, fortresses and metals."

I'm not sure what to think of a dwarf leading an expedition and worshipping a god of suicide and death...

Hah. I always lay a few traps outside my hatcheries, but a 'few' probably wouldn't cut the mustard :P

Heh, yeah not quite. Fortunately I have the surface littered with cage traps (I embarked in a Joyous Wilds tropical forest. Gotta catch those unicorns somehow!). I also managed to re-lock the door before all of them got out.

Unfortunately, they were still locked in with the egg boxes. After the next batch of eggs hatched, I decided I had to put a stop to that for the sake of FPS if nothing else. I dug a tunnel leading from the hatching room right up next to the ocean and carved a fortification to flood the chamber.

Speaking of the ocean, I've been building a lighthouse! Purely for my own amusement, obviously it serves no functional purpose. Anyone got ideas for a "light source"? I feel like it would be incomplete without one, but short of getting really lucky and capturing some titan or forgotten beast composed of flame, I'm not entirely sure what to use.

A light source, eh?

Clearly, the answer is MAGMA.

Magma does seem to be the best option.

If you don't know, this needs a pumpstack. It will need magma-safe materials (glass, a few stones and metals) built into a pump stack.

Be aware that any non-magma-safe materials will cause the deconstruction of the entire pump stack. Also, I recommend glass for the components - if you've sand it's an easy resource to get, and it doesn't require as much materials.

If you're bringing magma up to the surface I can't stress safety enough. Do not be sparing in your use of (magma-safe (even the linking mechanisms need to be a magma-safe materal!)) floodgates.

Wait for a dwarf to build a wooden artifact and set it on fire.

Wait for a dwarf to build a wooden artifact and set it on fire.

You know, that's what I was thinking of doing. I already have the most perfectly disappointing artifact to use. A durian wood mini-forge. A pedestal won't stop things from being set on fire, right?

I have not set a pedestal on fire yet!

Been playing for years, I have yet to set my fort on fire besides the usual grass fires during sieges and dragon attacks, what is the problem with your forts?
Is magma just less potent on my side? Am I too careful?

a caravan of tree-huggers came to visit and... I... traded with them.

What have I done? Now the same elves keep coming again and again to trade. There's been no dwarf caravans and outpost liaison for two years now. Guess I've deserved this fate...
