War dogs have been replaced by war grizzly bears.  Not the final goal, but a step in the right direction.

That's a whole story in one sentence.

In unrelated news, my plans for a more permanent fortress now include a second wave-motion gun.

Divemountain, Early Summer 290

Few years ago my parent civ The Lantern of Calming got into a war with a neighboring elven civilization, The Leafy Cactus. It didn't really affect my remote fortress far away from the heartlands, although it was sad to lose those yearly elven caravans bringing in all those exotic and delicious food animals.
Then, after few years of distant warfare:

An ambush! Curse all friends of nature!

I quickly zoom in to see what they're bringing and it looks like... the elven caravan?

Could it be? Few elves with familiar names from their last visit, now armed with spears and bows. Some camels, oddly still loaded with trade goods. That shouldn't be possible...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...but it is. One of the animals is even carrying the same damn roast pot I sold to them few years back.

After all these years this game still manages to surprise.

As I prepare to modify the entrance to the first cavern to capture a GCS, I see a hunter going for an elk bird as the spider draws near. "No you idiot! Come back! Those are deadly!" I say as she charges the big spider. But apparently the hunter knew what she was doing, she laid the smackdown on the GCS with her freaking fists like it was no big deal and casually went back to hunting elk birds, leaving it bruised on the floor.

Sometimes the game impresses me and mortifies me at the same time.

I never posted this story but I will now all these years later because it suddenly sprung to mind:

Long, long ago... Many versions back, there was a fort that came under assault by a FB that breathed flame. Now, my fort had no seals to keep it out and the brave (sacrificial) militia ran down the tunnels and stairwells to deal with the beast as it cooked dwarves in the caves. Some militia failed to obey and ran after it rather than wait in the stairwell so they could pounce upon it and after almost the entire militia was reduced to ash or molten puddles came salvation: a sword dwarf. He managed, somehow, to clamber on top of the thing while on fire and ran its brain through. As the dwarf stood triumphant on the FB, armor melting from his body, he held his sword up and screamed out a name for it which translated to "Screaming Flaming Agony." His howl reverberated through the fort and no sooner had he named his sword than he turned to ash and was no more. All that remained of this brave dwarf of a sword stuck in the ground, it lived up to its reputation and was a "cursed" item that always got the owner killed but not before getting glorious kills.

Check out this interesting combination of traits that results in tantrums with no stress.  He attacked a cat, NBD yet.  I love DF!

One of my badly crippled (fell off a looong scaffolding due to a dang hungry head...) dwarves has escaped the hospital, and due to being incapable of grasping, is currently in the process of dying of thirst.

EDIT: annnnd... he died.

Phase 1 of my megaproject is finished: the whole third layer of the caverns is completely secured, with walls covering any possible spawn, except a small corner accessed only through a drawbridge.

Phase 2 will see the installation of plumbing: I'm doing work to see if I can create an underground river to power a magma pump stack, and use cavern layer two to create a reliable water source.

Divemountain, Early Autumn 291

Another ambush by elves and camels who had obviously been members of the elven caravan during peacetime. Curiously this time the elves are leaving spatters of troll blood as they go; a closer look reveals their boots are just soaked with the stuff. Where did that come from?
