Yes, mages should be able to spend 2 mana to increase their spell's Zap roll by 1.
Yes, mages should be able to spend 3 mana to increase their spell's Zap roll by 1.
Yes, mages should be able to spend 3 mana to increase their spell's Zap roll by 1, but doing this provokes a Luck roll: on a roll of 2 or less, the spell loses one Awk.
No, this is a very bad idea.
No, this is a somewhat bad idea, I have my own ideas. (Post in thread).

Sample Turn Five: Attacks So Powerful That They Cannot Possibly Fail Yet Do

INIT:

Azer(2+3=5)
Conein(2+2=4)

Azer realizes he's right next to Conein.

Zap(5+2=7)
Awk(5+1=6)

Azer snaps his fingers, but nothing happens. Annoyed, he snaps his fingers again- then something cracks with a rather loud noise. There appears to be some kind of symbol on Conein's chest. Then there's a loud and large flash.

(4+2=6vs.6+1=7)

Conein is slammed with a massive bolt of lightning. The flash clears, and Conein looks at Azer with something odd in his eyes...

Conein counters.

(2vs.5+3=8)

Conein realizes he's lying prone. When did that happen? Regardless, he casts his shield.

Zap(2+2=4)
Awk(4+1=5)

A shimmering magic shield forms around him. Although less well made than before, it was just as powerful.

Random Event(4) Nothing happens.

Punch him in the throath, when he gasps for air, shove a fire globe down his mouth.

Sample Turn Six: Literal Zappidy, also Please Sign Up!

INIT:

Azer(2+3=5)
Conein(2+2=4)

(I swear I rolled again, but same init.)

Azer sends a punch at Conein's throat.

(1vs.3+2-2)

Azer throws his punch, and strains his arm muscles. Ow. He's old after all.

But his magic is still powerful.

Zap(2+2=4)
Awk(5+1=6)

A fireball appears in Azer's hand and it is promptly smashed into Conein's throat.

(1+1vs.5+2-2)

The fireball smashes into the ground next to Conein's throat.

Conein stands up and counterattacks.

Zap(2+2=4)
Awk(6+1=7)

A spiraling tendril of electricity flows forth from the aether and explodes onto Azer.

(6+2+1(high awk) vs. 1+3)

The electricity courses through Azer's veins... (1(azer)vs.4+1+1)

AGHH!!! (roll to minimalize damage:(2)) Azer is now stunned, nearly unconscious. Azer collapses onto the ground.

Random Event Roll(4) Nothing happens.

Spoiler: Azer: (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Conein: (click to show/hide)

Drain the bottle I apparently still hold to dull the pain.

Cast another electric blast at azer! Then go Kick him in the head or something!

((Btw, did you abandon the other game about your whimsy?
And if azer casts him allucination spell and does a low awk roll, do fun stuff happen to him?))

Might as well make a sheet for this. I'll just base it around a gimmick.

Name: Drake
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Appearance: A young mage, his emerald green irises have slitted pupils like a snake. His build is fit, although he wears green robes that are somewhat loose so they don't hamper his mobility

Stronga: 0
Tougha: 0
Quicka: 3

Zappidity: 2
Willpower: 0
Awkwardness: 2
Memory: 1

Spell one: Transform Self into Apex Dragon
Spell two: Enhance natural abilities of self

((The other game? I've got all actions, now I'm just trying to break the cycle of my lazyness- which is odd considering I can write turns for this and one other incredibly complex forum game pretty easily... grah. Turn for this... now.))

Sample Turn Seven: The Power of Electro!

INIT:

Azer(6+3=9)
Conein(5+1=6)

Azer acts with rapid speed, chugging the bottle he holds and restoring his mana, (2), but it seems that the pain just gets worse.

Conein proceeds to make an end of his foe.

Zap(2+2+1=5)
Awk(6+1+1=8)

He's overdone it. A massive wave of electricity flows forth from Conein's hands and washes onto Azer- oh wait. (2+2=4vs.2+3-2) Azer attempted to roll out of the way, but the electricity was near undodgeable.

(6+2=8vs. 1(tougha) and 4(willpower)) That's smite. The crackling electricity washes through Azer several times, then explodes out of him. That had to hurt. (saving throw(1)) Sometimes these things just happen.

Azer has perished. ((It's always difficult to decide when to kill a character, but two ones is a pretty good start. With a higher tougha roll Azer might have survived, and even remained conscious due to his willpower roll(4).))

Conein is the victor of Sample Round 1!

Random Event Roll(2) Nothing happens.
Conein kicks Azer in the head for no good reason. (luck for reanimated dead(4)) Thankfully your electricity has not produced Frankenstein.

UNLIMITED POWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER

Feel badass 'till something happens

((Yep, that was lucky. If i kept shooting toothpicks, i for sure wouldn't win. I'd prefer not to kill people and cooperate, but this is an arena game.
Also, the players are 4 now, not 3))

(6) You feel incredibly awesome. Then you realize that you wouldn't have won if Azer hadn't hit you with that lightning bolt.

You pull a guide to positive thoughts from your robe. You begin reading while you wait for the game to start in earnest.

meanwhile...

Two mages faced each other in the second Sample Round. They were (2) Drake and (3) Mage. Harvey is currently busy studying the brochure.

Drake, the Draco-Mage stood on one edge of the circular disk arena. At the other end, stood Mage, the Versatile One.

Ahem.
