Or effective seeing as a lot of mutons 'theme' in previous games that were shock troops to both do physical damage and mental.  Seeing an ally ripped apart and splattered on the ground by a plasma chainsaw is a lot more frightening that him just being stabbed.

Chainsaw guns. Really.

sigh.
That just makes it sounds like they have guns that shoot chainsaws, and that sounds awesome.
That reminds me of the Rocket Propelled Chainsaw. The most impractical weapon ever, but totally awesome.

It only works well if the chainsaws behave more like lightsabers.

I'm not seeing where people are getting "chainsaw bayonet" from. The structure of it and the dimensions of the gun aren't right for that. I'd say that it's just a slightly alien version of the good old saw-backed bayonet that we've been using and killing POWs for using since WWI. Mutons seem like they'd be strong enough to just straight up drag that through people with an overhead swing, which is probably what the animation will be.

Like chainswords? Give me sword and pistol and I'll designate 1 vet to becoming the Commissar and equip all my rookies with laser rifles and everytime they panic just cuz a Muton shows up, I will have the Commissar execute one of them to make the rest of them fight harder.

I must make this a thing. Closest game I know of is UFO:AI. BRB gotta go re-dl it.

It's not the function that people are comparing it to, but the aesthetic.

I know. But up until now I hadn't remembered how nonfunctional the Lancer looked, either. >.>

Though if you want to be fair, what you ought to be comparing it to is something a little different.

Which, incidentally, actually bothers to look like it works.

Hah, screw chain swords, bring back the Power Swords from Apocolypse. Those things were awesome. And they'd fit perfectly into the new melee combat.

So we can all stop talking about snektits and clittons long enough to get into a fistfight over chainswords. Firaxis' PR team are puppet masters.

Can someone please make a game about civil war era troops fighting retro sci-fi aliens with less effective tech than we have currently?  Because I want this in my life.

I've already hinted at this once in this thread.
