More Lovecraftian Monsters?
« on: June 13, 2015, 12:12:25 pm »

Personally I'd like to see more bizarre creatures similar to the Cthulhu mythos. Maybe even some tentacled Lovecraftian deities hidden deep underground or worshiped in disturbing dwarvish cults.

Forgotten beasts. Enough said.

There are giant, mouthless penguins that repeatedly chant the names of the dwarves fighting it.

It has no mouth and yet it can CHANT.

Not only is it creepy that it somehow knows the name of EVERYTHING.  But it's calm enough to chant it while FIGHTING.

If you want Cuthulu? There are much worse things out there.

MUCH WORSE.

I think Toady has to tweak the generator, though. When most everything has a trunk and a shell it quickly becomes goofy.

That's not really saying much; since the extent of Cthulu's power is being really big, sleeping, and inflicting "Did I leave the oven on?" thoughts on random people around the world for giggles.

That said, I'd personally like seeing some extra "Lovecrafty" effects being thrown into the procedurally generated mix. Something like causing instant insanity in living things that see them that fail to pass a discipline-check would be pretty FUN, especially if it decides to sneak into your dining hall before revealing it's horrible glory.

Eh, forgotten beasts for the most part aren't there yet. Most are "just a little off" rather than lovecraftian monstrosities, eldritch abominations, cosmic horrors, Eldrazi, or [insert choices here].

double posting but whatever: more nightmare fuel to the mix

evil biomes with land made out of flesh, eyes and hands

evil biome dust clouds that can go from anything in sort of making you into a mindless husk zombie to melting your skin
" A medium-sized monster walking on two clawed legs. It has two mouths on the ends of a pair of tentacles. It uses its mouths to digest its victims with acid and rows of razor-like teeth."
(no idea what monster this is but apparently its from df"

this is all. very lovecraftian.

One that fits out of a multitude that are mostly godzillas. (Also, that penguin would be a lot more impressive if it actually did intone the names of all it encounters. :P We don't get any evidence of its ability beyond that the description claims it can.)

That's clever, but I think tentacle hentai predates Lovecraft. (Lovecraftian Period being 1917)
(might want to fact check me there, and everything I say, for that matter.)
I have seen and read some Lovecraft, but the idea of most of it regards madness and eldritch knowledge.

The Cthulu mythos is the most popular and well-mentioned, but I think what we should be looking at here is making forgotten beasts not tentaclier, but more powerful on a non-dwarf slaughtering level,  like inducing insanity, collecting cults or consuming souls.

That's also what the suggestion looks at, rather than "Add Cthulhu."

But I like the idea of making forgotten beasts stranger, rather than just Giant marmots that can spit out flesh eating bacteria.

ok, that's pretty horrifying too...

well if you TRULY wish to debate about the origins of tentacle porn. then the earliest known art of tenctacle porn can be traced all the way to the sengoku period of japan and earlier...so yeah¨

and i myself have read mountains of madness(one of the most well loved books of his) and am somewhat well versed in the mythos. despite not having many opportunities to buy his books...

Just thought I'd reply to a bunch of stuff at once.

I'm not really suggesting changing the look of the forgotten beasts, more their interactions with others. I think a bit more mystery and horror before you discover the beasts. More creatures, dwarves, elves, people, etc... worshiping the beasts as a god.

Realizing all the awesome lovecraftian things already in DF has made me realize how little I've actually seen of the game.

Oh also tentacle porn dates from at least the early 1800's.

I for one would love more VARIETY in FBs, like why can't the breath misama and magma mist, and be random body parts like hands, heads or feet, or be actual recombinations of creatures e.g. a scaley ram with the legs of a kangaroo and the beak of a kea?
