Food noob
« on: March 21, 2008, 12:29:00 pm »

Yes, sorry about this but I need to ask. My current fortress is located at the bottom of a mountain (pretty nice actualy with a indoor natural waterfall..). At the top of the mountain, about five or six Z levels up, ther be mountain goats. My hunters hunt them but refuse to carry the corpse down to be used for food. I wonder if there is anything you need to do in perticular to get the dwarfes to do this? Is the Z levels part of the problem and what skills are used? I tried to strip one dwarf from everything but food and animal hauling, just went to party at the well. Butchering perhaps?

You need an animal stockpile for them to have a place to return it.  From there, butchers will take it and do the rest.

Actually, animal stockpiles are for caged live animals.

What you want is a refuse stockpile set to take corpses.  And place it near your butcher shop.

Also make sure you have your dwarves set to collect refuse from outside; it's in the "orders" menu.

Just be aware that hunting is risky, farming and fishing is more reliable, then again fishing has its dangers too(carp).

Hunters usually don't refill on bolts after running out. They continue to chase the herd of goats/horses or whatever until the life is stomped out of them to the horrible thundering of hooves and baying of mourning war dogs.
