The attacking group only consisted of these animals.
Armok's blood! The animals are revolting! It is unclear at this time if the elves have backed the coup, but it's a reasonable assumption.

No cats were known to have participated in the attack. It is uncertain what the current threat is to dwarfkind. More coverage as the situation develops!
Like to say this also happens to elves as I had a roaming party made up of tame animals lead by a dog and tiger killing elves in a war.
I talked about this before and was amazed to have a loyal dog general to follow my mindflayer necromancer I think this was before I got dfhack to.

though it might be a case of Human sites are chaotic and goblin like in nature with no sense of right or wrong.
glad to see some one starting wars than petty insurrections.

They all settled in the town, a whole swarm of them did!

They all settled in 'Homeslengths'

There were also much more battles involving only animals on the attacking side

And my personal favourite, an epic duel to shake the pillars of history...

NJW was absolutely right, I also sense Animal Farm-esque shenanigans. You can already tell that that sow-boar pair are up to no good.

Here is the ruthless fiend of a dog:

The dog was of "unknown parentage"?  That literal bastard! Its mother was also a bitch.

Supposedly the animals declared a war, instead of an insurrection:

Four legs good! Two legs baaad!

Fought the war over "hunting trophies"?  *GASP* All those dog meat biscuits finally caught up with you!  They could be coming for any one of us, next!

Also, as hilarious as this is, you should upload your save to DFFD and put it up on Mantis.  Or just share it, you know, whatever.

I think I may have just discovered what had happened.

There was an ongoing war between a human and a dwarven civilisation when I decided to settle in the human town. The first time I had re-embarked my adventurer, the towns people were talking of an oncoming attack from the dwarven civilisation lead by the dwarven king himself. Being the adventurer I was, I set off towards the closest hillocks and fortress sites slaying every dwarf that stood before me. I recall bringing back the heads of the king, the champion, and all of the barons and other nobles.

Believing I had ended the war after slaying over 100 dwarves, this is when I again retired my adventurer and unretired my fortress to allow some time to pass.

The rest is history...

So, it's like Conan or other Monomyth legends:

You murdered their whole fortress, thinking that if you slew them all, none would be left to avenge them... but carelessly overlooked was a pair of young pups and poults who would one day rise as a ragtag band of misfits that would rise to greater glory than any food supply had ever before claimed!

Hahaha, exactly.
Out of curiosity, who was leading the attack?

I'm not entirely sure, I'm not sure on how to find out either. I slew almost the entirety of the population so I doubt it was a dwarf leading the attack...
There must be some sort of underground kennel academy where these dogs learn advanced military tactics.
