I think that might tear them loose from the chain instead.
I recall Spahlerite's sea serpent breeding farm which had an interesting fact about chains: you don't actually have a tether between creature and location. You just have mind-control preventing them from thinking of leaving the 3x3 area around the location. Can't remember what happens when dodging off Z-level happens.
If I remember that same sea serpent thread correctly, falling to another z level just breaks the chain.
