From personal experience: I'd go easy on fantastical names and materials. Dwarves are pretty much invincible with steel already, and you cant go higher than adamantine (blasphemy), so everything in between is pretty much a filler, that does not have much gameplay value.

Masterwork only has 4.
Orichalcum, rare, good, but mostly used in magical/Special reactions.
Wolfram, heavy, good blunt weapons.
Mithril, exactly like steel, but lighter, needed for volcanic metal.
Volcanic, better than steel, extra damage against the strongest enemy.

That's it.

I guess it is a good idea to not go overboard with fantasy metals. I made Colossus Bronze to be very good for blunt weapons and armour, with poor cutting capabilities, guess I'll have to rework it. I'm also working on stone weapons and such, it's going rather well.

Thank you for the answers, only one question remains: How do the bar costs change with paired items (gauntlets and boots)? I remember that they were always prime candidates for some funny business.
I guess bolts still need one bar, since they are treated as a stack, but footwear has always been multiple items.

It's per set. The bar costs (material size) are used to make one pair of gloves or one pair of boots.

The problem is too much metals will cause cluttered forge menus. I'm already dropping stygian bronze because of that (its role will be taken over by new leathers).

I plan to have corrupted metals once I get the souls working, it will drop basic stats but provides sideway upgrades.
- Afelsteel, extra heavy and 10% loss in properties, damage bonus against normal beings
- Raging Volcanic, stats are reduced by 20%, magma hot at all times

I can't think of an upgrade to mithril, it is already what I want it to be. :P

Brace yourselves, micromanagement with fireproof gloves is coming.  :P

The succubi do not care but it will lead to a lot of hilarious accidents with stockpiles.
