A nice little seed
« on: December 08, 2007, 12:35:00 am »

Been playing with some numbers I've got scattered around, and finally found one with a starting location I love.

Seed: 20717035  (latest version "d", windows xp sp2)

Location...just north of the centre of the world map. You'll notice a volcano(The Thrifty Cinders) near a brook(Cloisterprowl), surrounded by mountains(The Horn of Inching) and the heavily-forested Lined Swamp of Wine. Position a 5x5 map with the volcano in the bottom right.

There's a plethora of trees, shrubs and water. Directly south of the river, one Z level down is plenty of farming-ready silty-clay. The volcano opens to the surface, as does the circular chasm located just north of the river.

As for what's below the earth...well, that's what I aim to find out now.  :)

I predict haunted an underground, semi-flooded fort populated by zombie whales.

If only...

Better yet, land-walking skeletal whales.

Located here on the region map, just north of the world map's center.

Created in DF v0.27.169.33d.

The red square shows approximately where the 5x5 square goes on the local map in order to get the volcano, chasm and river.

Ok THIS SPOT IS AWESOME.

Spoilers ahead...

Not only does it have magma, a river, and a chasm, it has ADAMANTINE.  I had my miners dig about 9 tiles south into the wall straight south of the starting location, and then straight down to the bottom, and they unearthed a "strange chamber" that contains 5 pages of elves and humans, all listed as "From the Underworld."

I am so happy.  so.... happy....

Edit:  I seem to have dug straight into Hell.  If you haven't seen something like this yet, you have to.  Seriously.

Someone should add this to the Wiki.

Looks like I have to once again create a new world.  This just sounds too good to pass up.

...wait.  Does this have metal and Flux?

Nah, doesn't matter.  Adamantine!

Let's see...

Tetrahedrite.. native copper.. silver.. native gold.. small pocket of aluminum.  That's what visible from the surface and around the walls of the chasm and magma pipe.  No flux and no iron ore so far.  There is quite a bit of copper, though.

I just threw a sacrificial miner and mason down to try to wall off the demon pit.. they are now barbecued.

I don`t suppose you could take a shot of your minimap inside the region and circle around where the pit is...?

Edit: I`m trying to replicate the Graveburials design, but now I`m scared I`ll spiral right down into DOOOOOOOOOOOOM.  And additional OOOOOOOOOOO.

I fully endorse this spot, so far.  33e compatible!  There is a metric crapton of Loam above the starting area that is 2 deep, so as long as you don`t dig above it   you`re golden.

Below: lots o` loam.  Directly south and a couple z`s above start.

Okay, I'm at work so I can't check this out, but if this is as fantastic as everyone is saying, it needs to go on the Wiki.  Especially if you can find Iron and flux.

At the risk of seeming completely helpless, where did you place the local map to get this configuration? My region map is positioned on the red ^. I see a red double tilde on the local map for the caldera. Pic plz?

Aw Snap.

Below: EET BEEGIIIINS.

I am exporting the various levels of my proto-fort, and I`ll edit the link in once I upload to map archive.

In case anyone is wondering, I used the 5x5 config suggested by topic maker.

Edit: and here`s the map: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-1671-bottledcanyon
I added a point of interest where my miners struck Adamantine.

Aaaargh the carnage!

The demon somehow ended up on the other side of a wall, and is in the process of decimating my populace.  Of my 23 soldiers, 3 are left, and they're unconscious.  The only civilians left are 2 babies crawling dangerously close to the booze stockpile and my clerk.

The clerk, amazingly, has spent the entire battle holed up in his office, diligently updating the stockpile.  Right now, the demon is sitting outside his office door, just waiting.

Edit: Kivish Vabokardes, Clerk cancels Eat: Interrupted by demon.
