Dawn of Time - New Blazecook, Carved Fortress!
« on: August 07, 2015, 08:36:54 pm »

Militia Commander Fron with Recruit Kaz, getting ready to get caught in the rain slime.

Welcome to New Blazecook!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a reboot of a human-based fort, now being rebooted with dwarves. It went swimmingly until the game ended up with a persistent crash. Blazecook WAS meant to challenge by building everything above ground, but this time we're going to carve everything from the surface down.

I'm going to be posting yearly updates. My goal is for this to be a multi-generational city, and it should therefore span a few hundred years if possible. Since this is a generational fort, and part of the fun is to trace bloodlines through the ages, I've added the [orientation] tag as per the instructions on the wiki (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Marriage) to avoid any sudden halts to any favorite genealogies. I play it after work for about an hour. It should be fun to see records of a town from the time of its inception in the year 02.

*There will be no dormitories in Blazecook. Individual homes only.
*Traps will not be used in defense of the city. They may be used in sensitive areas, such as tombs or vaults.
*Aboveground carved from the living stone farming and building only.
*We have FOUR BIOMES. One than rains poisonous slime, one that reanimates the dead, one that spawns rhinoceroses and one that is good-aligned and has yet to cause anything horrid.

It is going to take a lot of world-gen to get a good-aligned volcano XD. Anyone else got some input?

Pretty worth it for potentially flaming unicorns, though.

Not as much as you might think.  Although such a setup would all but exclude any other interesting geological features.  I'll see what I can come up with.

Actually, you're right. I genned a few worlds with a volcano inside of a good-aligned area. Hm.  :-\

Well, any ideas as to biome? Cold, Tropical, etc?

Try a Scorching or Hot biome. We all see plenty of glacier forts.

Hey guys, so I've genned some stuff.

Spoiler: The Winner? (click to show/hide)

These worlds were all generated with max savagery, extra caves for megabeasts and semi-megabeasts. This should allow for extra fun in any area.

So, what do you guys and gals think? I have NOT checked for things like weapons-grade materials, so what we embark with is what we get.

My custom job title should be "Volcanic Ninja" in this fort, if at all possible <3

It has begun.

We have a brewer, and Smith, 2 Miners, A carpenter, and a farmer. That, and an unarmed dedicated military dwarf named Fron.

As always, let me know if you want a dwarf. Starting 7 still has room.

Do we know what the evil weather does?

We do not. We will send a proud explorer (read: a cat) to explore the slime puddles at a later date. Land clearance has been accomplished, so we have a good area to start carving downwards from.

EDIT:

Judging from the pattern of slime on the ground, we do in fact have TWO evil biomes, one being a mountain and the other being plains or some such.

The slime falls on the plains, so maybe the mountain is reanimating? I'm sure we'll find out. This is a confirmed thing. 3 Chinchilla corpses showed up and tried to nibble a miner to death. The entire town was promptly converted into a militia, which beat them to (re?)death.

Fun fact: There are rhinoceroses on the map.
