So, funny things happening in my komodowan fortress, Bastitkhui, "Oiledcrowns".

An elf spearman studies intently at the komodo captain's biting demonstration.  He is given the chance to practice what he has learned as squad D is sent to practice on a roaming pack of wolves.  The elf immediately sinks his teeth into the wolf, while his komodowan comrades slash it to death with steel khopeshes and fan axes.

A leatherworker is moved to tears as he reads "Trade, My Love" a manual about the process of economic data collection.

As the first waves of visitors finally apply for full citizenship, every non-carnivore is assigned to the farms.  Farm plots that had been empty for years, waiting for this very moment, suddenly spring to life with crops.  The komodo populace must seem confused, perhaps disappointed by all this toil spent on plantlife, but as the inedible vegetables pass through the still, the komodos are awakened to the wisdom in farming.

I finally got my first non-goblinoid siege here at Bastitkhui, an army of Sharkopaths!  Along with some normal horses and beak dogs, they came riding giant magpies, giant cougars and giant crabs.  I imagine it looked something like this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The komodo fortress in a forest, so a few of the invaders got stuck in the trees upon entering the map.  At first it was just the magpies, which kinda made sense, but then the horses followed them up, which baffled in the mind.  A small group made it past the distracting branches to be slaughtered at the hands of a 40 unit steel-equipped komodo/bard army.  The Bastitkhui forces then advanced to meet the main sharkopath army that had been stranded in the branches, and it turned that accidentally climbing trees was not that bad of a strategy, because a lot of the soldiers who got stuck up there were shooters with sharkopathic ninja gloves (shuriken) and harpoon guns.  While the main army managed to chop off some feet from below, a Haukyngr Poet who had been recruited into the militia managed to climb into the try and defeat a handful of sharkopaths hand-to-hand, but outnumbered, the poor guy eventually got knocked out and died from his wounds after the battle.  I'll have to make a statue of him.

Of course, it being a few weeks ago now, I forgot that the original purpose of Bastitkhui was to establish a fortress in the domain of Nopsa Hogwaters the Bearded Tentacle, a swamp titan and the final megabeast of our era, that we might confront the beast and slay it.  And so the fearsome howl of the poisonous pterosaur was met with a heartfelt "oh, right" as Bastitkhui's militia met the monster at the fortress gate this day.  The foe landed not a single blow against us, and 40 steel-armed soldiers made short work of the creature.  Iufni Trengemah was named "Titan's Bane" when she landed the final blow, but in truth all of Bastitkhui deserves credit for this victory, and the dawn of a new era.  (PS, is it possible to check the new era title now that the Age of Swamp Titan is over?)

In other news, I was surprised to see one of the soldiers taking part in the melee was identified as Ilathe Dipiefami, Elf Mayor.  Interestingly, she has an amazing spatial sense, an iron will, a great ability to focus and a great kinesthetic sense, but she has bad intuition, little linguistic ability, little patience, a very bad sense of empathy and a poor ability to understand or manage social relationships.  Despite all that, she is a master persuader, master judge of intent, master comedian and master pacifier, perhaps skills she picked up as a bard before settling in Bastitkhui.  I'm tempted to relieve her of military service, but I'm going to wait and see if she gets re-elected, as I'm not convinced she can stay in command of our komodo fortress.  Interestingly, she has the appearance of being 353 years old though the year is 255.

Also I forgot until today that our civilization is known as the Hammer of Squashing.  Long live the Hammer of Squashing.

Also, I did make a statue of Arstruk, the Haukyngr Poet that fought the Sharkopaths in the trees, and was surprised that the statuer depicted a scene of Arstruk's marriage to Damsto in 244.  I always assumed that traveling bards were single.  What a world.

So the elf mayor was found dead in a tree, and we got attacked by a wereelk whose "eyes glow chartreuse".  Some vulps apparently didn't get the news of our victory over the sharkopath army and sent a puny force of 10 to attack.  It has been 5 years since world creation ended, so I guess I've just been giving up too fast in the past.

In the "real world" I'm trying to think of monster variations for the badguy civs.   Feedback is welcome.

Vulp -> Kyuubi = Larger creature, hydra-like 9 tail multi-attack.

Tadgher -> Steam Tadgher = A robotic tadgher, probably a copy of the Iron Men.  Maybe with Steam Breath.

Simiate -> Yaksha (thai) or Ahuizotle = Yaksha would just be a troll-like thing, Ahuizotl would keep the hand-tail ability.

Sharkopath -> Dragon or Sea Serpent = Bigger and badder, would probably not give an entire race dragon breath, but maybe they have a less destructive breath attack.

Pandamon -> Bearzerker or Shishi/Foo Dog = Couldn't think of anything great to replace pandas.  Foo Dogs are kinda interesting, but smaller than pandas, which seems less menacing.  There aren't any mythical bear monsters.  Bears are just too hardcore on their own.

Pingu -> Kracken = A sentient octopus.

Mammovich -> Grootslang = Probably just a larger reptilian mammovich.  Might play with the idea that grootslangs are actually sauropods.

Leokin -> Griffon or Saber-tooth Leokin = The problem is that I find the griffon's bird head to be less menacing than an actual lion.  They could be Saber-Tooth Leokin, but that seems less interesting than the other bad civ ideas.

Lagomer -> Jackolope = Antlers and probably increased speed.

Komodo -> Burrunjor or Megalania = Probably just a larger komodo.  I could make them amphibious.

Horstang -> Alicorn = Add horn and wings.

Haukyngr -> Thunderbird = Faster, maybe larger.

Gazeal -> Asanbosam or Vampala = Asanbosam are cool, but maybe too unrelated to gazelle, and hook hands might interfere with weapon wielding.  Vampalas would just be Gazeal that suck blood instead of graze, maybe larger in size.  Might give them iron hooves and horns to be reminiscent of the Asanbosam's iron teeth and claws.

Formecian -> Myrmidon = Larger version of Formecians, maybe with tougher chitin.

Vulp -> Kyuubi = Larger creature, hydra-like 9 tail multi-attack.
You could try writing interactions that simulate illusion or mind control, causing fear, nausea, self-transformations, etc.

Pandamon -> Bearzerker or Shishi/Foo Dog
You could go orthogonally with the Chineseness of Panda and make a Qilin/Kirin civilization of monstrous unicorn-rhino-bear creatures with the natural advantages of each of their constituent creatures and the potential for greater spiritual attunement, innate immortality/fighting skill, and even "magical" interactions.

Leokin -> Griffon or Saber-tooth Leokin
There's the king in Armello who's essentially a corrupted magical warrior. A civilization specializing in corruption and related magic/artifacts might be interesting.

Horstang -> Alicorn = Add horn and wings.
Give them telekinetic attacks with additional grasp, maybe super healing.

Haukyngr -> Thunderbird
Maybe a lightning attack in the form of a projectile? Or they emit gaseous "storm clouds" as they move?

Gazeal -> Asanbosam or Vampala
As long as your body parts have grasp, it doesn't matter if there is a "hook" attack associated with them that hits like a whip or stiletto. You could chalk it up to gazelle-fu or even subtle shapeshifthing/illusory/jedi/bene gesserit arts

Formecian -> Make them fire ants, with a venom that induces pain or nausea, or something debilitating. Maybe make them soldier ants with a ridiculous bite attack with super jaws.

While such ideas are interesting, I'm not wild about an entire hostile civilization with abilities like telekinesis or thunderbolts since a full siege of them might be impossible to defeat and I've always liked DF's approach to fantasy where those sorts of powers are highly uncommon.  I would not be opposed to such powers appearing on megabeasts, so maybe I could make creatures like a Royal Alicorn, Elder Thunderbird or Kyuubi-Oh that are completely animal-like and appear as megabeasts.  It would be interesting if they can appear as allies of their associated civs.  I think I've read plans to make civs that can elect a dragon as their leader, but it's a little complicated.

I might have forgot to explain this properly, the idea for these civs is that they are still anthros, not monster civs like the wyverns, and they will still be a copy of the original culture (same clothes/weapons/ethics), just with a new creature and the item thief/baby snatcher tags.  They will replace the badified copy civs that are in play now.

I thought about Qilin as the badified version of pandamons, but I felt like bears and foo-dogs are more familiar and I guess the Qilin does sound kungfu-ish enough to me and most people know it as the Kirin, which is japanese which would make it a weird choice to adopt the china culture.  Also, qilin is the chinese word for a giraffe, which makes things even weirder.  I'm getting more comfortable with the idea of Foo-dogs actually.  Since most of these creatures are larger versions of the originals, it would be interesting to have one that gets smaller.

Bearzerkers are also a potential badification of Haukyngrs, since they are Norse.  If I wanted to put Thunderbirds on a different culture, they might work as a badification of Mammovichs, since they are vaguely arctic american themed.  I do like the name "Grootslang" but I could make that a normal animal or megabeast instead.

Venom could work for Myrmidons.  As you've noted, Formecians aren't the toughest opponents, so that shouldn't give them an unfair advantage.  Actually, ant species can do a lot of crazy things like bite, sting, spray acid or explode themselves all of which I think I can do in DF (exploding themselves at a strategically optimal time might be impossible).  I wouldn't consider an acid spray to be as out-of-character as thunderbolts or telekinesis, but I would want to limit its effect to just pain and nausea kind of things.

Not sure how I would do a corrupted magical artifact race.  That sounds like a suggestion for Masterwork, it seems a little out of place in FuFo.  Some kind of a cursed Leokin race like D&D's Tyrfing or WoW's Undead could be interesting if I were drawing them, but with words, Saber-tooth Leokin is a stronger description.  I guess they don't have to stay lions though, a race of Demonoids or Devil-kin could replace them instead.  I've never been a huge fan of Angel-vs-Demon themes though, so something like Ogre-kin or Djinn or Asura would be more interesting to me.  Of these designs, I still like Saber-tooth Leokin the best.  Maybe STLKs could be ageless or incredibly long lived like Yeti to suggest that they are remnants of a time before time.  Some sort of corrupt/demonic physical trait could be fine, but I don't know what it would be.  Maybe extravision.

Also, the Golden Age has dawned!  I guess it just had to wait until the first day of a new year.  In 6 years of this fortress, I haven't actually broken into the caverns yet.  Maybe I'll try to slay some Forgotten Beasts while we're here.

Okay, new list.  First is the primary civilization creature, second is their associated MegaBeast.  Could probably still use some refinement on this before I proceed.  Some of them are just monster versions of the civ creature, but I upgraded most of them to related creatures.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Does anyone know how to make a megabeast show up as a civ member or remember a mod that does it?  I also want to make sure that the megabeasts show up in sieges, so I'm thinking the megabeast position should be something like a Captain or Lieutenant and not like a king.  Also, do megabeasts breed in worldgen?  I've heard that you can breed dragons in Fortress mode if catch them.  I say "megabeast" but I don't know if using the megabeast tag is what I really want.  It might be better to make these creatures more like sasquatches or ogres if the game is going to trip over them.

While civs can only have one creature in them, you could add a rare caste to each civ to represent these megabeasts. I'm fairly certain that you can restrict entity positions to specific castes, although I don't recall the relevant tags right now.

If the only way to do it is with castes, I'm not going to do it.  If ALLOWED_CREATURE "Only works with a caste of the entity's current race " then it's not what I want.  If ALLOWED_CLASS restricts it to a defined creature class, that will give me what I'm looking for.

My understanding is that you could reestrict a human position to only be held by gorlaks and it will simply be vacant most of the time. Arranging to get the megabeast in the civ will be the hard part since you can't have civ-specific pets.
