Early reports are that a lot of people in the strike zone didn't evacuate, because they didn't expect it to be that bad. Roughly half of Appalachicola (pop. ~2300) stayed.

We could be looking at some ugly casualty figures in the next few days.  :(

Yeah, I've seen in a couple places where officials are concerned that not everybody that should have evacuated actually evacuated. This is mainly due to the fact that it was a Cat 2/3 not that long ago and by the time it got strong, it was too late or almost too late to get out.

Meterologists and weather models are very good at predicting the path these days, intensity not so much, especially predicting the rapid intensification. Didn't help that it intensified just as it was starting to hit shore.

In one way, it's also fortunate that this is a quick moving storm, less time to wreak havoc, the center is now right around the Southeastern Alabama-Southwestern Georgia-Northern Florida border.

edit: Storm factoid: this is the first Cat 3 storm to track into Georgia since 1898 at least.

Yeah, the configuration of the Gulf Stream means that despite having a decent-sized coastline, Georgia almost always gets missed and just picks up remnants from other storms. I've seen some talk that this could still be a hurricane when it gets to NC.  :-\

Another knife-edged "should we make you work in this hurricane or will we look bad" moment for me, early morning edition!

Meanwhile, schools are like "Nope, classes are cancelled till Halloween cause we heard someone say the word hurricane".
(I kid...I'm glad they're closing this time, but still...)

Haven't seen that specifically, but considering that it's still holding onto Cat 1 atm and is moving at a good clip, it's plausible.

Or maybe not, this shows the winds have died down to 80mph. Still, the wind isn't the problem, it's the rain it'll drop as the area hasn't fully recovered from Florence.

Yeah, looks like it'll be down to TS here. Still, we'll see the outer bands by late morning tomorrow. Gonna be a fun day.

Wow, nature has some real beef with South Carolina and Georgia this year, doesn't it?

"Oh you survived the first hurricane, well HERE, have another! From the other direction, too!"

Georgia didn't actually get hit all that much from Florence though.

Hey, 50% accuracy is pretty good considering my usual memory for current events. Also, it's after 11PM here, so no accuracy guarantees are given.

Outer rain bands here, no big deal so far. Grey, rainy, moderate breeze.

It's just a moderate storm here, but the power went out anyway. Bleh.

Forced to work. Soaked to the bone. Still have the highest performance, so I got that going for me.

Power has flickered on and off several times this morning, seems to have stabilized in the last hour or so.

Creek is running high but still in its banks. River is a little over 3' now, well below any level of concern at this point.

More shots from the FL panhandle.

Half a million without power across FL, GA, and the Carolinas.
