Looks at least like it's only likely to be a cat 1, maybe cat 2. If that holds steady it probably shouldn't be that bad... lower category hurricanes tend to be relatively mild, especially if you're not in the immediate storm surge area or flood zone. 3 and up is where it starts getting extra nasty, maybe gtfo the way territory.

Looks like Henri's eye is passing off to the east. It might hit Montauk(which is nowhere near me) but I'm not sure of even that.

... so Ida be comin'. Current predictions seem to be suggesting landfall sunday as a cat 3 or stronger... probably smack dab on top of Louisiana.

I've probably said it before, but if so I'll say it again. I'm seeing a pattern, here, and if I were living in louisiana right now, I'm pretty sure I'd be figuring out how the hell to move to somewhere else. Something seems to have turned the poor bastards into a hurricane magnet over the last decade or so :-\

So hey, ida's up to cat 4, may hit cat 5 before omnifucking the Louisiana coast somewhere in the next day or so. If, uh, anyone happens to be over there and there's enough time/clear enough roads to get out, now is the time to fucking leave for a few days. Throwing that one out there.

If anyone related to you isn't cooperative on that point, I hear a sock filled with batteries is a good way to knock them unconscious long enough to tie up and stuff in a vehicle. okay so that's bad advice, but it might still be better advice than staying in the way of a cat 4+ hurricane please get out and leave the suicidal ones if you have to

It hit cat5 when it made landfall. Stay safe if you haven't made it out of the area.
Also, stay safe if you made it out. Use facemasks. Corona experts are already very worried that the closely packed up crowds in evacuation centres, combined with Louisiana's extremely low vaccination rate could lead to a disastrous infection spike.

Unless it's upgraded later, everything I've been reading is that Ida remained a high-level Cat 4.

Personally I think the categories are misleading; hurricane strength is a continuum and isn't quantized like that.  A high-end Cat 4 at 155 mph sustained winds is not really different from a low-end Cat 5 with 156 mph sustained winds.

I'unno, I think they work decently enough? They're not meant to be some kind of super accurate meteorological designation, they're rough categories for likely conditions/appropriate response in the effected area. It's never struck me as misleading, and I've lived through being in the general area of the entire gamut at this point; everything past maybe cat 2 will fuck you up, treat accordingly. Shit ain't complicated.

That the higher categories in particular kinda' blur together doesn't actually make much of a difference -- you're pretty omnifucked by anything past maybe cat 2 if you're in their way, 4 and 5 are just special "extra omnifucked" designations. Not what I'd call misleading, y'know?

Hilary is on her way to California!

California is of course very dry and on fire, and there is concern that the Hilary's winds may arrive before the rain, fueling the fires and creating another Maui situation with wildfires spreading at speeds over 100mph!
But even if that fate is avoided, California is then expected to receive more than a year's worth of rain within 24 hours! It's gonna be wet!

Cat 3 or lower plz :(

... though, like. They were talking about record breaking water temps down south not too long ago, so. NOAA forecast doesn't currently look like it's expected to break 110 mph winds, but that thing could intensify fast enough to break someone's neck and hard enough to knock over a bunker.

Here's hoping it's relatively mild :-\

E: And yup, there's weather.gov noting, hey, yer in the potential impact area, keep an eye on the news. Blech.
