Just as an FYI, anyone who was wondering about Thea2 but wavering on buying it can try the demo they pushed out recently, available on the Steam page. It's only 50 turns so IMO it may not show the weakest points (endgame grind), but it should give a good crashcourse in how the game feels, especially as opposed to Thea1.

I tried the demo.

But I fear I suffer from the case of not being able to decide where to build my town.

Any tips?

I've not played since EA. Assuming no major changes were made since then: you need a source of wood (any kind), and more than one source of food (to support large population). If you have a choice, pick flat land, so as to be able to move rapidly in and out. You can plan ahead for when you can improve the idol to one extra tile in gathering radius, but it's all optional IMO.
