A ratman corpse appeared on my bridge over the cave river. I have no military. No dwarf was interrupted from any task.

I know monsters can leap from ambush while unconscious, but dead?

Maybe it died of thirst waiting for a dwarven child, kitten, or monarch butterfly to pass by?

Apparently, stonefall traps don't either fail to kill or kill instantly like I had thought (don't know why); I think the ratman set off one then crawled onto the bridge before dying.

nope, stonefall traps actually don't do that much damage - enough to mash ratmen (and I assume antment and batmen) and smaller goblins but trolls and stronger goblins will take 2 or 3. Even mole dogs or whatever sometimes take 2.

Yeah, AFAIK they're a one-shot trap that does an incredibly high amount of damage.

I've had at least two "Troll springs from ambush!"es where the troll in question is almost dead when he arrives.

I had a troll die from one stonefall trap before. It was rather funny to see a large T standing on my first stonefall trap from the chasm.
