With my kids finally "of age", yet my work schedule still jammed-up, I wanted a game where I could easily run adventures for them. I also wanted something a little less heavy than D&D, but not boring/kiddie to parents/veteran gamers.

... So I made it.

Yup, I played a TON of DF a long time ago... even used that 3rd party app (dwarf doctor? dwarf therapist? I forget... but it let you manage yer dwarves outside the game in a much cleaner interface)

Still one of my favs... Tho I did enjoy Gnomoria for a time as well... easier interface, but also turns into an easier game once you get rolling.
