STATUS

Mission 3 is in full swing, and all slots are full!

Slots are on a first-post first-served basis. If you say that you will join next turn and then don't, that slot is still up for grabs for anybody else!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(Sorry in advance to anybody who liked my old forum game, "You Are Likely To Be Eaten By A Grue". I lost interest in it, and in retrospect I should have done something to wrap it up.)

So way back in the dark ages of 2013, I had this idea for a videogame. I'm making it happen in Unity right now, but it's slow going. So, here's the much-easier-to-create RTD version!

You're all controlling one character. There could theoretically be infinite players, but I would appreciate it if only a few people took actions in between updates. Keep in mind that your character can only be in one place, and only focus on so many things at the same time! :P

It is the year 2060. You are a nameless bodyguard, a cog in the machine, barely noticed by the real movers and shakers.

Your job: Escort and protect the lives of those who hire you. You are their all-powerful guardian and their beaten slave all at once.

Your charge: Ila Rio, Singer

A singer, dancer, fighter and seductress that can change her personality at will. Her public innocence hides the cunning and remorseless logic of a spider. Her outspoken support of mandatory gene-modding has made her a target of fundamentalists and neoprimitives. She knows that people are out to kill her tonight, and hired you to stop them or die trying.

She's a gene-mod, but her enhancements are more fashionable than practical.

The Op

Ila has just wrapped up a concert. After the concert, she has arranged a small private event for high-paying attendees to receive autographs and merchandise. Your job begins in the guest hall of an exquisite hotel, the Emperor Suites.

In the case of an emergency, you are to immediately take Ila to the police checkpoint, on the eastern end of town. The police can get her to safety from there.

Your gear

Ila insisted that you appear nonthreatening before her fans, but you managed to bring:

Your pistol
A typical firearm, fitted with a combination laser sight and LED flashlight. Three magazines of 14 rounds.

Your shield
A wrist-worn device about the size of a bulky watch. It contains an electrokinetic energy shield, capable of stopping most small arms fire. The entire device can be removed and deployed as an obstacle to pursuers, if need be.

Your jacket
A fashionable protective garment. It's flame retardant and contains fiber reinforcement. It can save your life in a pinch, but don't expect miracles.

Mission Begin

The banquet hall is packed. All told, there's probably 150 audience members. The large windows look out onto a deserted street; it's well past midnight now.

You're standing onstage, in the darkened area to the rear. Your charge is onstage, thanking the audience for their attendance and devotion, and explaining how the event will proceed. Ila will preform her upcoming single for the first time for them; then, there will be autographs and meet-and-greets, followed by a farewell.

The audience is clustered all over the floor of the banquet hall. Most are standing, although a few are seated at tables.

Ila is relatively static onstage. She has her "genuine" face on.

"Really, it means so much to me that all of you support my cause. Pre-conception gene-modding is the next step forward for health care, and I believe that-"

There's a loud burst of white noise, and the lights flicker before going out. There's no sound. Then the gigantic glass windows shatter, and a mob of shadows seems to materialize on the streets. The crowd panics almost immediately; they're running to the exits, to the right and left of the audience area. A few try to madly crawl on to the stage.

There are three exits. There are doors to the left and right of the audience area. The right door leads to the foyer, and the left door leads to the rooms on the first floor. There is a door on the stage which leads to the green room, and from there you can also go to the rooms on the first floor. Ila's motorcade is out front, through the foyer. Your armored vehicle is on the second floor of the staff parking garage, on the south side of the building.

Spoiler: Map (click to show/hide)

(You can ask about the layout of the hotel and surrounding area, I won't count it as an action. Your character has seen a map of the hotel and reviewed possible escape routes.)

The panicked audience might be more harmful at the moment than the threat they're running from. Get myself and my employer to the green room.

Does it only lead to the first floor? What does the layout of it look like?

(4) You grab Ila by the arm. She realizes what is happening immediately, and you take her into the green room.

The green room is rather small. There is a closet on the left side, a small changing area to the right. You can hear screaming from the stage that you just left; the attackers are inside the building. A fire alarm begins ringing, adding to the cacophony of yelling and footsteps.

There is an exit directly across the room, to the first floor. You can also go back the way you came, to the stage.

Does it only lead to the first floor? What does the layout of it look like?

Spoiler: Map (click to show/hide)

The "more rooms" is a narrow hallway with an exit back to the audience area in the banquet hall.

The parking garage is across the street, to the south.

The wall on the right side is lined with large glass windows, like the ones in the banquet hall.

Run south while staying close to Ila. Activate the shield and have it face the large windows in case of sniper fire. As I run through that area, take a quick glance at the elevator. Is it rising? If so, once out of line-of-sight of the windows, move shield to behind us. If not, move it to in front of us. Take out pistol with other hand before we run, in case hostiles just exit the elevator, at which point open fire while using shield to protect us from them and the windows, and while running out of sight of the windows (south). Once we reach that point, move shield behind me and Ila, face the threat and using the corner as cover fire at them. When they are down (or if I hear large group of hostile coming from north) move south. If there is still threat behind me, put shield behind. If not, put shield in front.

Am I a little too paranoid?

(5) Ila's fully cooperative as you lead her to the hallway intersection. When you reach it, you peek around the corner and get a good look at the attackers through the window.

There's only three at the window. They're wearing all black clothes and plain wood masks; the calling card of neoprimitive organizations. The neoprimitives are an anarchist group that largely targets corporations, experimental medical institutions, and first-world governments. Ila feared that they would target her for her public monetary support of genemod research; it seems she was right.

The group is lying in wait; they haven't seen you. Two of them have clubs; only one of them has a gun, and he's looking away, watching for police.

You can see that the elevator is on its way to this floor. You have some time before it arrives.

The first of the mob breaks through the door to the north. It seems like only two of them have found the backstage entrance.

Once we reach that point, move shield behind me and Ila, face the threat and using the corner as cover fire at them.

(3)

Ila moves when she sees you turn and raise the pistol, but not quick enough. Once she's clear you hit the slower one of the neos, who falls to the ground with a gurgling cry. The other quickly retreats back the way he came, presumably to alert the mob to your location.

The three outside the windows heard the noise, but aren't sure what it is. They're looking in your direction. You're on the southern side of the intersection and around the corner, so they cannot see you.

There is an exit to the north back to the stage, and south to the street. There's an exit to the foyer to the northwest, through the hallway.

Go down the stairs to the south while holding the shield behind me and Ila. Survey what it looks like outside. Any suspiciously parked cars that could contain car bombs or reinforcements? Stay away from those and keep my eye on them. Go in the direction of my car while staying under roofs and behind obstacles, always keeping the shield between me and the door I left through (or the path from it to me). Have my pistol ready for immediate and deadly use. and keep Ila safely by my side, protected from rear attacks by the shield. If possible, position her a little bit behind me as well, so I will block any surprise bullets.

(1)

You step outside with only a brief glance, and emerge into the harsh white light of high beams. A pickup stands between you and the garage, with three armed neoprimitives in the bed. They're aiming straight at you, and your shield isn't raised. Ila shrieks, but thankfully she doesn't grab you or run away. You hear a clamor and commotion as the mob breaks through the green room to the rear. The mob doesn't have firearms, but they'll be on you soon.

Have my pistol ready for immediate and deadly use.

(5)

Like the moves of a dance, you raise and fire. The neos are dead before they fall, and the panicked driver speeds the truck away and vanishes into the night. You have the feeling you won't be seeing him again tonight.

Go in the direction of my car while staying under roofs and behind obstacles, always keeping the shield between me and the door I left through (or the path from it to me).

(4)

You push Ila behind you, keeping your eyes on the mob. They're congested in the hallway, trampling eachother as they try to get to you. An occasional thrown stone bounces off your shield, and every jolt staggers you as you retreat, keeping an eye behind you. Every shadow looks like the silhouette of a new attacker, and the panic becomes more and more real as you advance into the open space of the deserted parking garage.

You are in the first floor of the parking garage. There are two exits to the second floor where your vehicle is parked; a vehicle elevator and a vehicle access ramp. You could also try to return to the hotel, or take your chances on foot on the streets.

(I'd like to point out to anybody watching that this is a multiplayer game, even though there's only one player character. Anybody watching the thread can jump in at any time, and actions will be on a first come-first serve basis until I work out something better.)

If you labelled it an SG it would probably get more players, but you might have to move it to FG&RP.

Keeping pace with my my employer, run up the access ramp. Getting to the car is an absolute priority, even if it means lowering my guard to frontal attacks. Once I get in the car... well, what can the car do?

What's an SG? I'm still pretty new to forum games, don't know all the things yet.

Keeping pace with my my employer, run up the access ramp. Getting to the car is an absolute priority, even if it means lowering my guard to frontal attacks.

(3)

It's slow going up the access ramp. The mob is at the bottom of the ramp by the time you jump in and start the car. They may be preparing some kind of obstacle; a spike strip seems likely, since your car can tank through just about any other obstruction. There's no way of knowing what they actually have until you drive down there and encounter it.

Quote
Once I get in the car... well, what can the car do?

Your car is actually a light armored vehicle, modified for use in civilian security contexts. It offers protection against ballistic attacks, can survive high-velocity collisions and drops of several stories while guaranteeing the occupant's protection, and its shape is optimized for knocking over and smashing through barricades. However, in order to have a weak point so that police can stop these vehicles should that prove necessary, the tires are merely conventional automobile tires; anything that would damage a car's tires can damage these.

You can exit to the next floor or the bottom floor of the garage, through either the vehicle ramp or the vehicle elevator.

Ride down the access elevator to a floor just below the one where the mob is, and drive up the basement access ramp before they can put a spike strip on that. If the basement doesn't exist, use another ramp to go to the roof and drive off the top of the building.

Oh crap. I am so late for this op. But, uh, if I can find... uh... whoever it is I'm supposed to be protecting, we might still be in business!

I mean, how often are terrorist attacks aimed at such frivolous things as pop stars, anyway? Whatsherface probably didn't even notice me not being there in the first place. Maybe I can pretend to have been there all along! Yeah!
