Crying Notifications
« on: November 06, 2015, 10:18:40 pm »

It would be nice if we got a notification in the combat reports for when characters start crying out of stress-- it would add to the current way that characters will express their emothibs by stating their emotions, and it would add another layer of realism and complexity that would otherwise go unnoticed. See the difference between this:

You scratch the Duck in the Head, tearing the skin and chipping the Skull!
Urist McDuckowner: Our time in the World of Eggs is so brief... Begone fear!
The Duck has been struck down.
Urist McDuckowner: You are a killer. You ended the life of Duck.

And this:

You scratch the Duck in the Head, tearing the skin and chipping the Skull!
Urist McDuckowner: Our time in the World of Eggs is so brief... Begone fear!
Urist McDuckowner is crying.
The Duck has been struck down.
Urist McDuckowner: You are a killer. You ended the life of Duck.
You are crying.

This kind of emphasized detail will allow the game to gain more cred as a "story generator" and give it more ability to generate meaningful, moving stories.

There is already crying in the game.

There is no notification that an individual has begun crying in the game.

There seems to be a few missing lines in the combat reports, as entertaining as they are. Especially dwarves seem to fall over a lot without it being reported in the combat logs (or, often just in one side of the combat logs). I've seen a lot of reports like:
The militia commander blocks the silver bolt with his shield, parries the copper pike with his axe and kicks the trolls head off in an arc. Followed by: 'The militia commander stands up'. With no real indication of what he's doing on the floor. Maybe he just felt like a sit down mid-battle...

they seem to sit down quite often to move into a tile that is occupied by a standing ally. That would be quite unreasonable behaviour in a real confrontation, wouldn't it?

They lie down, not sit. They're in a crawling position when they do so, too.

that's what we call tight formation recruits!

as a serious note though, perhaps we should request Toady to take a look at combat pathing algorithms or something. Or is it already reported/requested/planned?

I know in past versions dwarves would try and avoid pathing through occupied tiles, dodging each other in corridors when there is space, but I was under the impression this was no longer the case.

The whole laying down thing is an artifact of the tile representation. The vagaries of this system have always been a problem and likely always will, though minecarts forced a rough tile size, and future multi-tile creatures may force other aspects to be made clearer.
