FPS killed me again. Human Towns

Hi.
I want to make this game playable.
I know how to reduce of trolls and goblins.

But how to reduce lag in towns? I want to have some fun, and I want towns to appear in my world, but I have terrible lag in towns (and keep).

In this case I'm asking You - How to have fun and avoid FPS death? What should I do? I can't play this game anymore with FPS lag (only adv mode here)

I'm thinking probably population caps? Not the init.txt stuff, worldgen options. Advanced worldgen necessary.
