13th Hematite, 1053
The human caravan had arrived, and this time brought a human Guild Representative with them.  The rep wanted to meet with Surath but as she had other things to do, namely getting the best deal out of those greedy traders as possible, she put him off.  He then proceeded to follow her everywehere.  DIdn't he know that that was most impolite, Surath thought.  The dwarven liaison, for all his faults, usually waited in her office for her to finish.

When she finally finished with the trading, where she'd brokered better deals than the previous year, the rep asked her what she wanted to humans to bring next year.  So she ordered lots of wood and a goat for Kroma.  These humans were going to be very good friends of theirs.

24th Hematite, 1053
Surath was walking by the forge when she heard shouts of glee coming from inside.  Entering, the first thing she saw was a silver floodgate.  A.  Silver.  Floodgate.

"What is that?"

"This is Egathusal."  Egathusal, meaning Junglecrumbles.  "And look, I encircled it with bands of silver and it menaces with spikes of gold and tsavorite!  Isn't it great?"

"Yes, it is."  It was worth 108,000*, far more than the millstone Shadowhide.  Although Surath would have liked it much better if it didn't have that picture of the irritating Elves speaking to her.  But, studying it more closely, she had to admit it was a fairly good likeness of her.

Viktoria: When Kroma and Bricktop approched me regarding a new glass statue, of course I was intrigued. I mean, anything that let me use my talents was a good thing, right? But when Kroma outlined his ideas for the statue - well, wow is all I can say. This is so exciting and will look absolutely fantastic! I think we were too excited, Kroma's initial sketch of the toad was 15 levels high. I suggested we make it 20 - a wonder that all dwarfdom would admire! Bricktop was of course the voice of reason, saying a respectable 10-level toad would still be awe-inspiring and a lot more achievable with the fortresses current wood situation. He still seemed quite excited about the whole project though, starting excavations almost as soon as Surath had oked it. I must confess, I can barely wait to get started. It is time to create!

OOC: Yes, I tried to make the design smaller but it didn't look like a toad.  However, it's going to be a hollow toad, so hopefully it won't take 500 glass blocks.  Since this area isn't as challenging as I was expecting it to be, I've decided to make the fort as awe-inspiring and legendary as possible.

2nd Limestone, 1053
One of the engineers came racing into the entranceway shouting, "It's going to kill us all!"

Watson stopped him.  "What is?"

"A giant desert scorpion!"

"Show me where it is."

But the poor engineer flatly refused to go back out.  "I'll go out when it's gone and not a moment before!"

Hmmm, scorpions had a hard carapace, Watson thought.  I'll get my spear.  A short while later Watson, accompanied by Jusk and Kroma as backup, sallied forth to take care of the threat.  Kroma also brought some dogs, just in case.

After chasing the scorpion all over the desert for over a week and losing a couple of dogs, it was finally brought down with the help of one of the dogs.  Another threat was nullified.

"One of the planters has claimed my craftsdwarf's shop." Kroma complained to Surath.  "And she won't leave! She's building something tasteless, I just know it!"

Surath sighed.  "I suppose it's best to let her build her creation.  What materials does she need?"

"She's grabbed some shells and leather, and that's it."

"The shells we're currently not using, so she's welcome to those, but I had plans for that leather.  Oh well, guess we'll just have to slaughter more animals."

Nosey's Journel Entry:

The time for battle has come, and what happens!? I'm benched! Me! Nosey! Of all dwarfs here in this forsaken outpost, they chose NOT to bring me. Sure, I could have been sleeping, or eatting, maybe drinking a bit...but I deserve to kill something! I'll just have to train more until I can prove to them I'm not a sideliner.

OOC: My characters in all the community forts tend to disappear into the fold, I'll be more active here then I was in Nist Akath

OOC: Actually, you're one of the higher-level wrestlers.  The only reason I didn't add you to Watson's squad to take care of the scorpion is because the last time I sent wrestlers after a desert scorpion (in a previous fort) it was a case of scorpion: 7, dwarves: 0.  Watson's a speardwarf when he's not training his wrestling/armor use skills and Kroma and Jusk are both marksdwarves.

Korbin came to warn Surath about the planter.  She had apparently finished her construction, for she had run up to Korbin in the adjoinging workshop to show him what she had made.

"It's a turtle shell helm menacing with spikes of turtle shell.  She also included a picture in leather of you speaking to the dwarven traders, though it's not as good as the one the blacksmith made."

"A helm?  Well at least it's something we can use, unlike andesite millstones and silver floodgates."

"Wait, here's the kicker.  She called it, Feregen Dasnastetur Shoveth."

"Beastgifted the Steppe-Boulders of Mystery?  What in the name of Armok...?"

"I tried to reason with her, to get her to name it something else, but she insisted on that one.  Wouldn't hear of any other."

Ok, Surath thought, maybe this place wasn't as difficult to survive in as she had thought, but it was clearly unbalancing her dwarves more than was normal.

Examining the helm later, Surath found it to be worth less than some other non-artifact items, valuing it at only 4,200*.

Kroma came running up.

"Surath, Surath! Would you say the scorpion was more reddish-brown, or brownish-red? I mean, kaolinite is probably too red, but sandstone is too brown, right? Anyhow, V can't make glass that color, so we'll need some masons on the job. And don't you think we want to commemorate the dogs who have given themselves to the security of our city, as well? What do you think is appropriate for that?"
"OOo, and shouldn't the hall be polished stone? With maybe one wall of engravings?"

25th Sandstone, 1053
Kroma came to Surath to discuss the scorpion statue that would be placed opposite the toad in the Grand Gallery.  She wanted to know what color the scorpion had been.

"More of a brownish-black, I think.  Watson would know for sure, he actually fought the thing."

And when Kroma said she'd get the mason's started on cutting sandstone blocks to build it, she was brought up short when Surath interrupted.

"We have no sandstone, mudstone, siltstone or any other brown stone.  The only thing brown in this fortress is wood, and I refuse to waste wood on a statue!  If you insist on making it brown, we're going to have to import each and every block!"

Kroma frowned, "I guess that will have to do...but it's rather irritating."

"If the miners manage to find some brown stone, I promise we'll get the mason's right on it.  But until then, building this is going to be very slow."

"At least we don't need as much stone for the scorpion as we need glass for toad.  I estimate it'll take about 300-400 blocks for the scorpion."

Surath burst out, "400 blocks!  I'm supposed to convince that liaison that we need 400 brown stone blocks?  Who do you take me for, the Queen?"

"If anyone can do it, you can.  You've been getting better deals than anyone else who's had to trade the few times you couldn't."

"I'll do my best, but I think I'd be better off praying to Armok to give us the necessary stone."

Kroma then shifted the topic to the Grand Gallery itself, suggesting polished stone and perhaps some engravings.  However, she had to content herself with Surath's promises of already having a plan in mind, which would be unveiled when the time came.  She did mention that her plan did involve a great deal of stone-smoothing and with that she had to be content.

More migrants had arrived from the Mountainhomes, and some actually had useful skills.  A brewer had arrived, as well as a hunter.  The others were put to work hauling until Surath could decide where the extra labor was needed most.

Immigrants:
Thresher (male)
Brewer (female)
Fish Dissector (female)
Gem Cutter (female)
Gem Cutter (male)
Hunter (female)
Note: see my previous posts for a complete list of unclaimed dwarves.

Watson: I'm growing more concerned over supplies. It seems like with all these projects going on we may run out. I'm going to go and talk to Surath to ask her about our food stocks and how capable the farms are at providing. I realise that i should check the situation before i lock up Kroma and accuse her of being insane.

(Also what's the situation on Watson's office etc and how is his training going?)
