10th Timber, 1053
With the new arrivals there were so many dwarves that they decided they needed a mayor to handle any complaints and manage the fort.  Surath was pleased when they chose her due to her experience in those areas.  They also decided she needed a new title, and named her 'Mayor'.  She decided that, in keeping with her new position, she needed a few things.  A better office.  A dining room.  A weapon rack and armor stand (she wouldn't be outdone by 'Captain' Watson, who had been promoted to Captain of the Guard).  And she decided she needed an extra chest in which to store all the fort's files.

Her first meeting in her new role was with Watson.  He was quite pleased with his new office and dining room, but wanted a better bedroom.

"Will an engraving or two help?"

Watson agreed that yes, that would do.  He was also concerned about the food supplies.

Checking the records, Surath replied, "We have almost 1,000 worth of food.  We have a little over 100 of booze, but the shortage there is barrels.  I've ordered the carpenters to make as many as possible using the last of the wood.  The haulers will just have to sleep on the ground for the foreseeable future."

Reassured, Watson returned to the barracks to train some more.

OOC: Watson's been training the wrestling skill, he's now at no label level.  He'll pick up the spear again to train with when I've gotten around to making or trading for more spears so that he has someone else to spar with.

Walking through the food stockpile, Surath decided that she wanted doors.  Two, to be exact.  It didn't matter that every room had a door, she insisted on two doors.  When the masons asked, tongue-in-cheek, if she wanted them out of a specific material she replied, "Two doors!  Nothing special, just two doors! Is that so hard?"

"No ma'am!  Two doors coming right up ma'am!"  After all, they thought, perhaps Surath was planning some construction that required two doors?

"Y'know, I reckon two doors alone could improve our defences while not impeding traffic. You see, one could use them as a sort of funnel during wartime. This would impede the march of enemies without posing any problems during peacetime because then they'd be open. Plus we wouldn't require as many traps. The downside is that we won't have as many traps... And two doors alone wouldn't do much..."

10th Moonstone, 1053
The purpose of the two doors Surath had ordered built was made clear when she ordered them installed at the openings into her new office and dining room.  Looking around, she then decided that two doors weren't enough, she wanted another, conveniently forgetting that she had ordered the masons to build only doors and stone blocks until further notice.

[OOC: I've already placed some doors in strategic locations in the entry hall, for just that purpose.]

Another dwarf had been possessed by the spirits of this place.  Kroma, this time.  She hurried off to the crafting area and grabbed a craftsworkshop.  She then ran around grabbing some andesite, marble and shell before demanding some cloth and metal bars.

13th Opal, 1053
Surath went to the blacksmith that morning to demand some pig iron items.  Three of them.

"But all the pig iron we have is going into the steel production."

"I want pig iron items!"

The blacksmith shook his head at this and sighed.  Surath seemed to have become somewhat...unbalanced...since her recent election.

22nd Opal, 1053
The first green glass block of the titan toad statue was placed today amid great ceremony.  The only dwarf missing was Kroma, still insisting on cloth.

Since the only cloth not present in the town was spider silk, Surath assumed that was what she wanted.  So she ordered one of the peasants to take up weaving and use the cave spider webs available all over the chasm to make some cloth.

"But I don't have a clue where to start!"

"It might be good to start by building a loom," replied Surath drily.

1st Obsidian, 1053
Cursemountains really did mess with people's heads, Surath noticed that afternoon.  Nosey had come to her, requesting a quick word, which she granted.

"A couple of the newer soldiers have been naming the cave swallowmen over in the chasm.  They've named two so far."

"Naming cave swallowmen?  What in the world has possessed them?"

"They said that since the cave swallowmen live here too, they need names.  Taalen, Watson and I have decided they cannot be left unsupervised, so Watson's with them now."

"Oh, dear Armok.  First Kroma goes strange and now this!"  Surath sighed.  perhaps she should have foreseen something odd occurring, since the last few months had been relatively quiet.  But naming beast-people?  That was unheard-of!

20th Obsidian, 1053
Surath was relieved when Kroma came dancing into the office saying, "Look!  Isn't it beautiful?"

'It' was a scepter.  An andesite scepter.  "I've named it Tegirnazush, Breedblood in the common tongue," she added.

Surath took it from her, to examine it more closely.  It really was very well crafted, much better than Kroma's normal work.  Kroma had studded it with gold and encircled it with bands of turtle shell, in addition to covering it with menacing spikes of andesite, marble and...cave spider silk?  How had she managed that?  Turning the scepter around to look at it more closely, Surath noticed an image, also worked in cave spider silk, of seven dwarves travelling.

"Oh yes, I wanted to immortalize our journey, especially since we've made of this place a quite comfortable home contrary to our first impressions."

"Very well done.  This scepter is worthy of the Queen herself."

Kroma snatched it back.  "Breedblood is not leaving this fort!"  And she stomped out in a huff.

Hmmm, a very nice scepter, worth 46,800* to Surath's experienced eyes.  Yes, Kroma had done quite well.

But Surath was concerned.  Shadowhide, Junglecrumbles, Beastgifted the Steppe-Boulders of Mystery, Breedblood.  None of these names inspired confidence.  And since all of these artifacts had been made by dwarves under the influence of Armok only knew what, she had to wonder what horrors were in store for the growing fort.

12th Granite, 1053
The Elves had arrived.  Again.  Sighing, Surath went to meet them.  This time they had brought some plants, good for making booze, and lots of cloth, which Surath ignored.  After all, the new weaver was churning out silk cloth as fast as she could collect the webs, so they didn't need the Elvish cloth.

Surath gave the alarm.  A goblin Master thief!  Fortunately, Taalen's squad was nearby and the thief had managed to get into the middle of the chained war dogs guarding the entrance.  A very short massacre followed with no injuries to the dwarves and the goblins were less one master thief moments after the alarm was given.

20th Slate, 1054
Surath's order to produce pig iron items had not been fulfilled, and she called Watson into her office, demanding that he punish the one responsible for failing such a mandate.  In the middle of the meeting, who should barge in but some Dungeon Master sent by the Queen, with a whole list of room demands that she (the Dungeon Master) wanted.  Apparently a new group of migrants had arrived.  The first to enter the fort after the Dungeon Master was a furnace operator.

Surath had commanded the blacksmith punished, but with the interruption occurring just when Surath was specifying which dwarf, Watson must have misunderstood.  For he proceeded to jail the newly-arrived furnace operator as punishment for the failed mandate.

Surath later tried to tell him he had the wrong criminal, but Watson refused to back down.  The furnace operator was in jail and in jail he would stay until the sentence had been completed, while the true delinquent, the blacksmith, continued happily about her duties.

1st Felsite, 1054
Jusk came to Surath to ask if Kroma and the new ranger could come with him to take care of a giant cave swallow.

"It's already killed the hunter that went after it and the siege operator who went to recover the body.  It needs to be taken care of."

"Fine, fine, do what you need to do.  And, Jusk, in future, go to Watson, he's the military captain.  I've got too much on my hands just running this fort.  Do you realize we now have 72 dwarves?"

8th Felsite, 1054
Jusk and the ranger took the first shots, and fought the giant cave swallow fiercely.  Jusk taking minor injuries to the arm, and the ranger taking major injuries to the right arm and leg.  Kroma arrived shortly after, in time to fire the killing shot.  Unfortunately, before the marksdwarves were able to kill it, the giant cave swallow claimed no less than five lives.  One woodworker, the fish dissector, the hunter who had started it on the killing spree, the cheese maker and the siege operator.

"They were mostly useless dwarves, suitable only for hauling, and clearly some of them were stupid idiots," remarked Surath when Watson came to her with the news.  "But we will miss the siege operator, I had plans for her."  And then she sighed, "I'll order more graves dug."

8Felsite54

The encounter with the cave swallow proves it. With Tegirnazush in my hand, I am invincible. Unfortunately, the monster killed 3 lesser ones before I could stop it. While Surath will undoubtably erect a statue to commemorate this event, I think I've reached the point where I deserve a special place for quiet reflection.

I'd like a statue garden, with onyx or maybe even a gold statue. But most important is mist. I'd like mist to come wafting through my status garden. Others will be allowed to use it, but it will be mine. I think I've earned it.
