Jerks what be stealing my books
« on: December 04, 2015, 05:59:52 am »

Is this supposed to happen? Guys staying in the fort keep on stealing books, scrolls, etc. If it is supposed to happen, how do I stop it?

Quote from: Malarauko
I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

make a gigantic library complex

fill it with books most arcane

trap it with trigger plates trapping whoever steps inside

they slowly wither away for months doing nothing but reading and starving

when they die I open a secret hatch so my dwarves can loot the books they carried with them to my fort

every year the Library's great archive grows even more

It's like I'm operating a trap for really dump D&D players.

I swear people are stealing my weapons too. I lost an iron lash I traded some humans for that one of my dwarves had equipped. Suddenly his item was 'missing'. Books are one thing but bitches don't be stealing my weapons, I keel u o_o

Protip: statues cannot be made out of wood unless they're artifacts. If you see what appears to be a wooden statue outside your fort and it's not an artifact, destroy it immediately.

This is because multiculturalism isn't something dwarves should practice.

I've yet to really experiment with the settings, but have you changed your library to citizens only?

I want to tell you they were bad men, cephalo.  I want to tell you that with a better overseer the Fortress never would've gotten so bad someone would get offed in a pointless fisticuffs.
But the sad truth charlie?
It was inevitable.

I have had several quires written by my scholars and then immediately taken by a visitor and never put back on the shelf (which means I couldn't bind them) and then eventually the visitor left with the book.

It looks like Toady has introduced adventurers in fortress mode! That's exactly the kind of thing human controlled characters would do when they can get away with it. Let's just wait until the bugs are fixed so they take you furniture, metal bars, and everything else that isn't nailed down (unless the nails can be stolen too).

Fun fact, in adventure mode now you can topple statues that have been placed as furniture, then pick them up and walk away with them. Or beat someone to death with them.

Sure it is, there's nothing like having some whips around to OP kill the dumb Giant Capybaras that keep killing my people. Also human mercenaries make great meat shields.

The idea of people absconding with your books isn't a horrible idea. Its a very real library problem. It just shouldn't happen this often.

I agree on this entirely.  And there should be hum.  A scribe or fortress guard to stop you if you try walking out with library property if you haven't properly checked it out.

If a visitor borrows a book from the library and fails to return it on time, they must pay the late fee or the hammerer will dispense dwarven justice!

Does binding a book in magma-proof material make the whole book magma-proof? Because if so I think I found a way to get books back from visitors

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well, we've got the sheriff/captain of the guard.
Why not just have it where books taken out of a library by outsiders be a crime?
Dwarven justice for thieves.
Hammered and permanent imprisonment.
