Newbie Question: Frequency of patch releases
« on: December 21, 2015, 01:59:52 pm »

Hello,

I've been playing DF for the better part of a decade, but not as much as late so I'm out of touch with the release "schedule".  Can anyone speak to how frequent we'll see patch updates after this release?  Certainly we've had several already, which is great.  I'm plagued by the recently fixed "trading goblets in saves loaded into 0.42.03 from older versions" bug  and I'm trying to see if I can anticipate this patch relatively soon or if I should just start a new game under 0.42.03.  If the latter, new world gen?

  Thanks all!

I mean, if you have a game you really enjoy on an older version, just keep playing it! There's no predictable schedule to updates.

There's not a release schedule, of any kind.  The releases happen when Toady One makes them happen.

Since 0.42.01 was a new major release, it has new major bugs in it, and will be followed by several bug fixing releases.  These can each take anywhere from a day to a couple weeks, depending on how many bugs Toady decides to fix in each release, and how long it takes to fix them.

After a few of those, Toady One will get bored of bug fixing and will start working on new features.  If the new features are small, then these may be additional 0.42.xx minor releases.  If the features are major, then he'll be working on the next major release, and it'll take months (at least).

We're in the "frequent patches" part of the bugfix cycle. Expect each minor version to be current for 1-3 weeks - unless Toady accidentally breaks something huge in a minor patch and needs to get a fix out ASAP.

Thanks all,

This was pretty much as I thought it was. Release "Schedule" was in quotes for a reason, and why I was looking for some anecdotal evidence.  I've been playing long enough to know how it works, but just not how Toady was releasing lately.  And by lately I mean more than 2 years ago.

Of course I could have just looked at the DF Announcements topic :/  Here's the release date for the last 4 Major Releases and their last revision:
04/01/10 0.31.01
03/38.11 0.31.25
02/14/12 0.34.01
06/02/12 0.34.11
07/07/14 0.40.01
01/07/15 0.40.24
12/01/15 0.42.01
12/12/15 0.42.03

Updates come quickly at first and then tail off as stability is obtained.  The goblet trading fix will come! ;)

Only two bugs I care about the worshiping bug, that's next release and then the dwarfs carrying around mugs and goblets everywhere.

I think everyone wants certain bugs fixed then again Toady just ignores some just because they'll be replaced by a new system.
Be great if he fixed the military ones and loyalty cascade. Though they're more likely to be addressed under Fortress Starting Scenarios.
There's also some of the harder crashes that hes been unable to track down and fix, some crashes invalidate saves.

He said that he might bring in some minor features, said something about myth generation being apart of next part (artifact update) if he had time.

I might add that the goblet trading bug isn't absolute. I get it when trading with the dwarves, but I have no problem dumping sub standard mugs/goblets on humans (not sure if I've dumped any on the elves, but expect that to work). Note that this was pure 0.42.03, not an upgraded 0.40.X save, though.
