Wouldnt it make most sense not to make a unique sprite for each, but a spriteset with icons for all professions, and the copy+paste all creatures into those? It would be better than nothing, and so much less work.

You just make an icon for all professions, once. And use it as a template to add to the creatures.

For me, the tile is the icon. If I came up with a "Hammerman" icon, I might as well draw him holding a hammer. Especially since I'm working with a 12x12 pixel canvas. I'd also want to avoid mystery meat navigational icons, so to speak.

I begrudgingly ignored that last thought with a few of the giant animals I use and it still irks me.

burned: Agreed, especially on 12x12. I always end up thinking about GemSet with 24x or 48x.

To be fair, a number of those won't actually show up in vanilla because they're [AQUATIC]. Don't let me discourage you though, they're merely [AMPHIBIOUS] in the Modest Mod ;)

That's an impressive start, Doren! Obviously plenty need adjustment, but a lot of the soldiers look ready to go. (What weapon is that between Pikemen and Bowmen?)

On the subject of tiles, the total amount of tiles in one sheet cannot exceed 1024.

I thought it was worth repeating so others wouldn't find out the hard way.

On other hand copypasting isn't that bad. It speeds up work significantly after all.
