DF Song Converted to IRL Song!
« on: December 12, 2015, 07:32:44 pm »

As a bit of a mini-project for today, I decided to try composing a song based on the guidelines of a procedurally-generated Adventure Mode song.
The first step of the process was taking screenshots of the descriptions of not only the song type in question, but each instrument involved in it. (Note that I am using Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom. Because Nintendo.)

Using that info, I configured a couple of midi synthesizers in Ableton Live, trying to get them as close to what I'd imagine such instruments to sound like as possible. After that, it's a matter of filling in the blanks, and doing simple stupidity-checks so it doesn't sound completely awful (Playing the melody on a drum set? Really?)

All in all, about 3-4 hours of solid effort.

This is the result: I present to you, "A Glittery Suitor in A Minor". http://vocaroo.com/i/s0AGfzFqzFiU

Depending on how well this post goes, I may do some more. I also invite other musically-inclined folks to join me in this, as it is an excellent exercise in songwriting.

EDIT: Here's the current song list:

This is a fantastic idea!
Great job on your song, it really fits to the description.

After composing dozens of fan songs for Warframe, I crave to do something different and your thread has given me the inspiration I needed!
Thank you so much.

PS.:This is my first post since early 2014, your post managed to finally lure me out of my lurking hole :D

Pretty good!

I wonder if this sort of thing takes off (digital Dwarf music albums?) - would the dwarf who composed the original song be credited for it?  :P

I'm overjoyed to hear such positive feedback! I'm already planning on dusting off my Vocaloid software for my next project, which I have chosen based on name alone: The Birth of Control

All I can say is that I am now quite excited to hear what a 'shrugga' sounds like!

I already did that part. It's going to be a bit tricky for sure, as the only proper instrument is unpitched. http://vocaroo.com/i/s0FAZMMmgPg9
I wouldn't even consider it an instrumental track. More like an ambiance...

EDIT: Status update. The instrumental part's pretty much finished. But unfortunately, that's the only part I can do on my own. I'm pretty bad at writing lyrics, and I don't have the right voice to speak/sing them. But in terms of the vocals, I'm thinking spoken word would be the best bet for something this incredibly minimalist...

I don't know why but crediting the dwarf who composed the song would really amuses me. c:

Woooow, this is fascinating. Maybe in 10 years DF will do this on it's own. Keep going, I'd love to hear more!

Excellent work here, really hope this sort of stuff becomes more common. As a non-musically inclined person, it's difficult for me to imagine what these songs are supposed to sound like, so someone going through to the effort to bring em to life really shows what the song generator is (mostly) capable of.
