Darkwind: War on Wheels: We need more people!
« on: January 30, 2016, 10:39:58 am »

http://dark-wind.com/

This game is part MMO (characters learn skills, you retain some of your cars, etc.), part racing/shooting game, part hardcore (character permadeath is a norm), and all difficult.

All for free.

And to be honest, this game needs more love.

As of late, the game has been pretty quiet and empty when it shouldn't be, so I've decided to post the link up to Darkwind War on Wheels up here. Give the game a try, and if you like it or hate it, let me know in the forums below.

A list of things you should know so that you don't wind up ragequitting in the first five minutes:

  • A major portion of this game is played on its website. Go to www.Dark-Wind.com, log in, and you can access your account, your gang of racers, and your cars from there. You can also do things like cancel race registration, equip your gangers with pedestrian weapons and pedestrian ammo, equip your cars with weapons and ammo, as well as repair them, change the tyres, etc.
  • You should NOT risk your own cars. When preparing to register for the race, scroll down to the very bottom to check if a vehicle is supplied for you. Some races require you to bring your own car, which may cause you to lose more money than you make if you wind up taking too much damage.
  • For that matter, don't risk your gangers immediately by running for deathraces. Cars take time and money to repair, gangers can take the better part of a month to recover from some injuries (like comas), and the costs and time lost from those can really screw you over.
  • This game is turn-based. Every player is given ~30 seconds to plan out their next move, more if you've got multiple cars or units to manage. Don't rush too much, take your time before submitting your move.
  • This game's physics and car driving mechanics maintain some degree of realism. There's things like slipstreaming, a steering wheel system to affect turns and how they work, engine and tyre damage reducing performance, the terrain affecting how driving works, actual physics, etc. Don't think you can get by with just turning the car as hard as you can when a curve comes up.
  • The "ghost" that appears at the start of your turn is not a fully accurate representation of where the car will be at the start of your next turn. The accuracy of the ghost reflects your driver's driving skill, less skilled drivers have a less accurate ghost. Other things that may affect your car's position include: Colliding with other cars, getting hit (especially with explosives), taking significant damage to a tyre or your engine while moving, etc.
  • Do not go "scouting" by yourself. If you do, you will most likely take heavy losses. When scouting, you take on a fleet of armed cars and try to take down their drivers so you can loot the cars and their attachments. It's somewhat risky and requires some skill but it can pay off quite well if you mange it right. It's better to team up with other players, however.
  • Try talking to other players in the chat if you need help or specific advice with anything.

Hope this helps, and happy deathracing!

I've played this plenty of times. It's pretty fun and enjoyable although I found that you get yourself limited by the free to play status fairly easily once you get the hang of the game.

Your never not actually allowed not to play and it's not time based. And the game is quite fun until you hit the cap of sorts. So it's definitely worth the time spent on it once you get over the rough UI.
