Can/Should this room/industry guide go on the wiki?
« on: January 06, 2016, 09:21:11 pm »

I've written this little guide:

Github: http://gist.github.com/5a89514a49fc01232aa9
Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/3zpemk

I was recommended by someone on Reddit to put it on the wiki. This sounds like a good idea so others can contribute/correct/improve it.

Question 1: Do you think this belongs on the wiki?

It's not really contributing anything that hasn't already been described. Basically, it's just summarized reference material.

Question 2: If so, what do you think it should be called?

I had originally called it "rooms" and since upgraded the title to "Rooms & Industries". Now it includes Industries, Constructions, Noble Requirements, Military structures and Uniforms. I feel like it's got everything important now though.

From a quick glance, it seems most of the information is already on the wiki in one way or another - as you said.
The Noble requirements are on the specific noble pages (and indeed listed in game), military structure and uniforms on the "military" page. The "Industry" page and its links are already much more expansive and the list of rooms is on the "room" page. In my opinion, a single page collecting all that and nothing else doesn't necessarily fit in the 'learning flow' of a new player very well.
"Quickstart guide" is probably not the best place since it's really just meant to be as short as possible and handhold the player along his first fortress.
However, "Dwarf Fortress Mode" could benefit from a bit more overview. That page seems like a good candidate to expand a bit in roughly the style you used.
The nobles paragraph and the military section could be expanded, Constructions & rooms could be reviewed (and locations - temples, taverns - could be added). Right before trading, your industry summary would fit in well as separate section, too.

I'm too lazy to paste and format all the links properly, so I put all pages in quotation marks.
If you need help with editing, feel free to ask here.

Thanks for the opninion CLA, I agree with all of your points. I think I will leave this off of the wiki after all.

The main benefit of the wiki which extends to the dwarf fortress mode is the information is useful and with a purpose of information. I'm not sure my content really fits in there. My guide like I said is more of a cheat sheet or reference material.

I just don't think it would be a meaningful contribution to the wiki. Helpful if that's what you are lookng for sure, but not wiki material.

If I would add to that page it would definitely be in another format. And the information I put together can surely be used for that. But that's not something I want to do right now. Of course anyone reading this can go ahead and take what I have on Github and put it into the wiki if they want to.
