That's actually a good idea.  Build your Fortress just underneath the ice, then release the volcano to submerge yourself.  You will have to figure out how far away magma can be to prevent refreezing.  Once you know the magma-to-ice distance for keeping it melted, you can create trenches or pockets around the Fort to give yourself permanent water.  And thus, Dwarf Atlantis.

You could make a slow and circumlocutive death trap out of it where you lure enemies into a walled off area on top of the glacier that would serve as an air lock. Hollow out a chamber in the z level beneath the ice sheet but leave the ceiling between them intact and then use pumps to fill and empty the magma chamber on a lever pull so you can heat and refreeze the water on command.

this made me think, do creatures slide on the ice? for some reason with this recent weather im in the mood for makeing an ice pinball machine.

Creatures don't slide on ice and a creature's weight won't break ice.

I think you can carve minecart tracks in ice though.
