Oh yeah, bragging works. I think it depends on relative kill count, and most leaders of all kinds have none, including bandits. You can also use it to convince someone you're experienced enough to follow you, but this can backfire if you name a kill that could be construed as a murder, esp if it's a member of their civ/site.
