Not 2d.  This fort is from 40d, the last version that did not include guaranteed spoiler-metal and actual caves in the earth.  Also, minerals were much less common, normally only being 1 per world tile per level.  It was very much a 3d fort.

Only vaguely. Made of the same substance and put to the same use, but a bit like comparing a castle and a doublewide trailer.
