It seems when I set my max dwarves to 3000 (dang typos) that NO immigrants arrive, this includes nobles.  it also seems to stop caravans from arriving.

Sounds rather counter productive to me......arent certain immigrents rather important to the success to a fortress?

I changed it after I had gotten 30 or so total pop. I had it at 50 and wanted to get more.  which brings up my point: some people like limiting how many they get.

Are you sure you're on a map that allows for dwarf trade? If the caravan never comes, you'll never get immigrants..

You could never run a fort on 3000 dwarves on a modern computer anyways. Hell, even 1000 dwarf forts are completely unfeasible. Though I really wish I could run a 1000 dwarf fort...  :(

An update to this. I have never gotten a siege since then... ran 7 years and have a pop of over 100, tons of gold and platinum crafts and statues, plate mail, etc etc. never a single siege... and I drowned / burned about four elven caravans including a representative sent once.

BOOOOOOOOOORING.

time to start again.

Good point. Though you could have just had lots and lots of births.

Anyway, the point was that maybe reversing the change brought the invaders back, so its still possible that the 3000 limit does prohibit sieges as well.

I bet that's the case, because I had pissed the humans off pretty bad while that was on (unintentionally, !three! of their emissaries were in the communal noble room watching my nobles snooze their last snooze and I didn't realize it...) and they 'waited' till I changed the popcap to attack....er start campfires on the far side of the river and sit there for days.
