I feel like elevating the tracks makes things a little unsporting. OTOH, everyone is dead, so it is not yet game-breakingly effective.

In that case, cavalry needs volume, 3 tracks, using platinum or gold minecarts, and maybe 3 more empty ones to maim invaders for the archer riders.

Turns out Legends Mode is all lies. Tells me 18 goblins attacked and 4 died, when there were clearly about 100 of them, and more than 10 got killed.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

The goblin captain low-balled his failed attack.

Or most of the goblins were hired contractors. They don't count.

Failed attack? All the dwarves died. We were outnumbered 2:1 with highly inferior troops. It was a massacre.

Maybe it only counts the ones that score kills?

So is it no problem to get the marksdwarves to ride the minecarts and shoot at the same time?

If the marksdwarves are activated while in minecarts, and they are properly equipped, they will fire bolts. The difficulty is the horrendous amount of micromanagement needed to get everyone armed and on the track. It may be possible to use werebeasts and keep them in minecarts at all times, given that they never starve.

I started a new fort between Joyous Wilds and Untamed Wilds biomes, and without warning, this happened.

I'll have to learn how to use Mantis now.

EDIT: Those are husks of everyone except one miner who was underground at the time.

Wont the marksdwarves run out of bolts pretty soon, even with quivers?

And if you do not disconnect the track from the field, won't they just get  out when the cart stops to collect the bolts, thereby getting themselves killed?

You can at least toggle to stop collecting spent bolts.

The micro-management should not be an issue if say a squad of 10 marksdwarf only have 6 archery targets for training.
All the marksdwarf has push vehicle labor on, in which they will probably ride the minecart one at a time per track/route.

Is it possible for minecart riders to pick stuff from their minecart? My intuition tells me "NO" though. Actually, can't remember if it is possible to unload minecarts in any way except dumping.

It would be so awesome otherwise. To load minecarts with decent amount of food, booze and bolts, then send them out and forget about them for months. Not sure if they could sleep properly though.

Arena Mode suggests that is not a thing that is possible.

What about things in backpacks and waterskins?

I'd expect backpacks and waterskins to work, so they could stay hydrated and fed for a while, so the problem would be running out of ammo.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Well, I built this in the previous version:

Observations:

Minecart shotgunning isn't just for cargo; riding dwarves go flying if their minecart hits an "obstacle" at speed

Dwarves will dodge out of a moving minecart, with predictably poor results

A track that connects back to your fortress attracts thieves and invaders; air-gapping the track (using minecart jumps, of course) mostly prevents this

Getting multiple carts on the same track in a safe manner is quite difficult, but can probably be accomplished by some system of "holding loops"
