Crafting Statistics 42.06
« on: February 24, 2016, 03:00:00 pm »

Urvad Rosatathel, Soldier dreamt of crafting a masterwork someday, and this dream was realized. Urvad Rosatathel, Soldier was a dabbling Carpenter in Zulbanabir, "Bannerromances" in the year 150.

Wait, what? Dabbling dwarves can make masterworks now? They sure can...

Not much has changed since my previous crafting test. I figured it was time to check it again after one of my soldiers made a masterwork scroll roller while on stress-relief crafting break. This time I did a more extensive sample for Dabbling and Legendary+5, including attributes and preferences. The tests were done by producing 1000 Carpentry items with various dwarves. I used DFTools and the newly updated Therapist, with some modded raws (included at the bottom of this post if anyone is curious).

It seems that a preference is roughly equal to 1000 attribute difference, at least for a L+5 dwarf. It's probably a bit less, since the dabbling dwarves with a preference did not perform as well as dwarves with an extra 1000 of attributes.

A dwarf makes the 1000 items in something more than a year, for single items. That increases all relevant attributes by about 60. If the 1000 items are produced in one job, as in this test, the increase is just 20, so such jobs are probably training attributes slower to compensate.

Blue Dwarf has been happy lately. He did some !!science!! recently. He admired a fine forum post lately. He was enraged by a forum troll recently. He was upset by the delayed release of the new version of Dwarf Fortress lately. He took joy in planning a noble's death recently.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

I always knew low level dorfs could kick out masterworks, as I've seen 10 masterwork bone xbows before I got even level 7 in bowyer for a dorf... but its nice to see that even DABBLING dorfs can kick out a masterwork or two if they have the right stats.

Does having unfulfilled needs or the opposite, "focused by fulfilled needs" matter for making masterworks?

Does creativity affect this chance to make better quality also?

I filter my founder mason, carpenter, weaponsmith and armorsmith based on creativity, then preferences.

How exactly are attributes taken into account for this?
Both dabbling and legendary dwarf have same ones?
Are both fit for the job, having high Strength, Agility, Creativity, Spatial Sense, Kinesthetic Sense?
If not I can see how results of this are pretty much random.

Can't really tell, it would not be easy to test. I specifically didn't want that to be a factor in the testing, so all crafts were made straight after embarking with fresh unstressed dwarves.

Yep, that's one of the attributes :)

I think creativity is more useful for general crafting, especially for a carpenter early on (making spiked balls to sell). Useful preference combinations are very rare, and only work for a single item type or material. A clothier is maybe slightly better off with a cloth preference, or a bookbinder that likes scrolls.

I gave all tested dwarves a flat 1000 or 2000 value in all attributes with the DFTool.

I didn't test each attribute separately, so I can't tell if something like Spatial Sense is actually making a difference. I suspect only Creativity really matters.
