You can give or demand tribute from other leaders, though it's unknown what this actually does (if anything). You can also get hearthpeople. That's about it.

So there's no point right to get through all this if you'll get nothing in the end.

Not yet. Remember, in the grand scheme of the game's development, this is all relatively new.

It'll be fleshed out later as Toady comes to it.

Paying tribute seems to be something like a fuedalism vassal.  So one can claim/takeover/build a site for themselves, gather a hearth army and force the surrounding Lords to bow before you, aka pay tribute. There is no immediate gameplay benefit but your adventurer will go on to play his new role as Lord in the world should you retire him. It's mostly for RP purposes right now but it's alot of fun and injects some personal connection with the Lord's of the land.
