There's always at least one who just has to play a sociopathic psychopath. Every game.

Which orange circle on the map up there are we starting in, and shall we wait for a sixth before getting a list of possible cargoes?
The one in the centre (I can mark it, if needs be), and we'll look at the cargo options tonight.

What does the first mate do?
Helps out the captain... second in command, kinda?

Does your character like candy?

Er. Probably? Must be better than ship's biscuits.

The first mate generally keeps order and enacts the captain's commands. Often, the mate will take off-shifts at the helm, and double check calculations and charts and stuff. The mate is also a sounding board for the captain - a way to help him make wise decisions by being something of a confidant and devils advocate (not as in offering questinable advice or encouraGING EVIL PRACTICES, BUT AS IN POINTING OUT POTENTIAL FLAWS IN THE CAPTAIN'S PLAN OF ACTION AND OFFERING COUNTER PROPOSALS. .. I didn't know I had caps lock on, and am too lazy to fix that. sorry bout that.)

Oh, and I am by no means an expert on naval command structure and the duties of a first mate, but hey, it sounded good to me - good enough for a game, right?

Belgrafian Warehouse District

Three stern-faced men, a slightly unhinged looking woman, a twelve year old boy and a very smug cat stride aboard their new floating home. After making themselves comfortable, they hoist the tradewind sails, and move off towards the warehouse district, cargo coupon clutched tightly by an eagerly navigating Jackson.

After being overtaken by a handful of larger, better-decorated ships, it occurs to you that the tradewinds are somewhat budget, and that a upgrade to northwind, stormwind or even solar wind sails might be better. Still, at least it's a method of propulsion.

Being the only initiate of Belgrafian High Finance, only Jackson is allowed into the warehouse, where he is presented with a confusing plethora of cargo options:

  • Glass beads
  • Gold
  • Cattle
  • Chocolate Rabbits
  • Furniture
  • Radish wine
  • Potato demons
  • Turnip-leaf dresses
  • Bloodoak trunks
  • Salted turkeys
  • Grand pianos
  • Leviathan bait
  • Guano
  • Peacocks
When choosing cargoes, 3 things are important: the rarity of the items, how easily transported it is, and whether or not anyone will actually buy it.

There is room in the hold for any two of these, or two lots of one.

Everyone should probably take a look at the map and decide which city they want to go to first. Starting in the big one in the centre.

Octavius pulls up his gloves.
I'd prefer somewhere quite a bit away, such as the city to the northeast, but I'd imagine the Captain has a better choice.

Octavius lightly pushes himself away from Candy Gal.
No thank you. Perhaps after we head to sea?

"I suggest gold and pea-cocks. Gold is a no-brainer, and pea-cocks are worth a lot, if not difficult to maintain. They're also a rarity.

As for our destination, I suggest... the coved city to the south.
